The latest EU row will be an embarrassment to David Cameron

EU CHIEFS sparked fury last night by demanding almost £1billion extra from British taxpayers.
It threatens to take the UK's total contribution to Brussels this year to nearly £14billion - just short of £550 for every home in the country.

Yet the bill could soar even higher next year after Euro MPs yesterday voted for an inflation-busting 6.85 per cent pay rise for themselves and European Union staff.

The latest blow to taxpayers comes as Brussels seeks another £8billion in total from the 27 member states to plug a black hole in its coffers.

Tory Treasury Minister Greg Clark accused Brussels of "fiscal incontinence", adding: "When both in the UK and across European countries we're advocating fiscal OF THE EU responsibility, we can't possibly exempt EU institutions from that. We have got be consistent."

Tory MP Douglas Carswell said: "The EU can forget it, there is no way I would vote for this. Local services in my constituency come first.

"If the EU needs extra money because of the euro crisis, why not just break up the single-currency system?" Richard Ashworth, Tory leader in the European Parliament, called for an end to this "Oliver Twist mentality".

Nigel Farage, leader of Ukip, said: "David Cameron must veto these demands. The EU is in a hole, it is one of their making and it would be outrageous if the hardpressed British taxpayer was forced to stump up."

The row will be an embarrassment to the PM who is likely to face pressure from Euro sceptic Tories at next week's party conference in Birmingham.
