Penn rants on illogical corn subsidies in America [nsfw]

Just recently, the Institute of Medicinehas pointed to a new obesity warning (42% of Americans obese by 2030?) and said that what we need is more government. @joe prole Ethanol is a horrible fuel additive. It ads volume but not horsepower. Nor does it extend the range of your vehicle. In fact, MPG goes down (at least 10%), so you have to buy just as much gasoline as you used to to go the same distance. I think there is ONE station here by me that sells real gasoline, all the rest is this shit corn fuel.

Horse pucky. E85, flex-fuel, powers cars in many countries. But you're partially right; BTU's are ~20% less for E85 than regular gas.

Corn is useful for lots of things, feeding live stock among it. The alternative is have it grown overseas where it is not as efficient. The American diet is the easiest way to kill yourself there is, it all tastes great! I am diabetic and every day is a constant battle to get the numbers down. American diet is fat, sugar, and carbs, you really have to go out of your way to find anything that isn't.

His basic premise is valid (big government is wasteful) but corn subsidy in the US goes back to 1922 -- high-fructose corn syrup was invented in 1957.
He's acting like the purpose of corn subsidy is to make HFCS cheap, when the fact of the matter is, the major farming subsidies were applied before it was even invented.
The end result is the same (cheap HFCS), but his argument is flawed.

@jum_runky I heard that HFCS itself is subsidized. Unless I got it all mized up in my head, a move by Ronald Reagan to lower food prices so that it would not be an issue in the reelection campaign. He could state, "but I lowered food prices" and he'd be right. I may be wrong about the details, but it was something like that.
And Penn is right that it is beyond stupid to have the government take more money from the tax payers to raise the price of something that is subsidized. HFCS is More..
