An ongoing criminal case based in Seattle has prompted the FBI to investigate a Las Vegas warehouse owned by famed magician David Copperfield this week, the FBI reported Friday.
But the agency was tight-lipped about details. FOX News, citing anonymous law enforcement sources, reported that a woman in Seattle has accused Copperfield of raping her in the Bahamas, where, according to the illusionist's Web site, he owns several islands.
The television news network said the woman reported the alleged attack after returning to the United States.
Robbie Burroughs, spokeswoman for the Seattle FBI office, had no comment on Copperfield.
"There was investigative activity on Wednesday in Las Vegas," she said. "It is related to a Seattle FBI case. But the case is ongoing, and therefore we can't say anything."
Seattle police also had no comment on the Copperfield case.
David Staretz, spokesman for the Las Vegas FBI office, told reporters the investigative activity occurred at Copperfield's nearly 2-acre warehouse, where the magician stores thousands of magic items in what he calls the "International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts."
KLAS-TV in Las Vegas reported Friday that 12 FBI agents searched Copperfield's warehouse and seized a computer hard drive and memory chip from a digital camera system. Relying on an unnamed source, the station also reported that agents found nearly $2 million in cash.
David Chesnoff, Copperfield's attorney in Las Vegas, issued a written statement saying "an unidentified woman has made serious allegations" against Copperfield.
"Although authorities have not revealed her identity to us, we know these allegations are false because David Copperfield has never forced himself on anyone," Chesnoff said.
In an interview with one media outlet, Chesnoff said the allegation was about "supposed sexual misconduct."
Copperfield, 51, has been a longtime performer at the MGM Grand casino-hotel on the Las Vegas strip, where he does six- to eight-week stints several times a year, according to an MGM spokeswoman.
He performed two shows there Wednesday. He is scheduled to perform next in Jakarta, Indonesia.
