Taiwan Hotel Fire Kills 7.

Raw video : TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Arson was a possible factor in the deaths of seven people, including three Malaysian women, in a fire at a Taipei hotel early Monday morning, the authorities said.
The fire at the White Snow Hotel, which also left one person gravely injured, was the most deadly incident in the capital in 15 years, reports said.

The fire most likely started inside a room on More..the second floor around 2:42 a.m., and was under control by 3:11, said Taipei Fire Department chief Hsiung Kuang-hua.

Even though fire fighters arrived at the scene within five minutes, the fire spread more rapidly than expected, with heavy smoke blocking all exits, Mayor Hau Lung-pin told reporters after a visit to the scene.

Police found five bodies on the second and third floor, including two elderly men, aged 92 and 82, and three women thought to be Malaysian citizens, reports said.

“The fire was not caused by an electrical short-circuit, so an outside element cannot be ruled out,” Hau said, referring to arson.

A local official told reporters a suspect empty metal can had been found near a staircase between the third and the fourth floor, while media reports said an object had been heard falling in the staircase, followed by the sound of breaking glass.

The hotel was a 36-year-old building on Taiyuan Road on Taipei’s west side. The building used wooden paneling in the walls separating its 27 rooms, but still passed recent fire safety checks.

Hau said he was ordering a thorough safety review of old hotel buildings across the city. Less..
