The Owl and the Pussycat

In the famous poem by Edward Lear the owl and the pussy cat marry and dance by the light of the moon.

But as this amazing photo shows, the love and affection expressed by the pair in their beautiful pea green boat does not extend to the battle of survival in the wilds of Minnesota.

This brazen barred owl is pictured grabbing the hapless domestic cat after swooping out of the darkness in a surprise attack. According to nature experts in the U.S., the owl - which is easily identified by its evening call that sounds like ‘Who cooks for you! Who cooks for you!’ – repeatedly drops its oversized prey from high up in attempt to stun it into submission.

It then devours its meal - with not one of Lear’s famous ‘runcible’ spoon’s in sight. The owl is known by other names, including Eight Hooter, Rain Owl, Wood Owl, and Striped Owl.

But it is probably best known as the Hoot Owl based on its distinctive, culinary call which is repeated eight times in sequence. Up to 25 inches in height and with a maximum wingspan of 50 inches, the owl possesses amazing strength for its modest size, and is able to tackle victims weighting far more than its svelte 2.3 lbs.

Cats are something of a special treat for the opportunistic predator, which has a varied menu, preying on mice, shrews, rats, squirrels, rabbits, mink and weasels - as well as birds including woodpeckers, grouse and even fish, turtles, lizards and scorpions.

It is attracted by campfires and street lamps, and recent studies show the woodland creature is increasingly thriving in America’s northwest suburban neighbourhoods.

  • I seriously doubt an owl can lift a cat higher then a meter or 2. And that way to low to be able to "stun a cat". And having a tom cat and if I lift it from behind he immediately bites and scratches me pretty violently I doubt the owl can keep him for more than a second or 2 and if he manages to catch the owl it's finished for good.
So I call this bullshit , video or it didn't happen.

    • @tbyte with a wingspan that big I wouldn't even blink an eye, you have never seen an owl up close or held one have you? They are big and they are fucking scary with huge talons that would tear open flesh or arteries with no problem.

    • @tbyte North American Great Grey owl has a wind span up to 71 inches. No problem taking a cat for a flyby.

  • Where's all the cat lovers now who constantly scream bloody murder if a cat is being thrown in the air. I can hear you all now, that owl should be charged with animal cruelty.

    • @treday Those are the same ones that want dogs 'put to sleep' when it kills a cat (like they regularly are)...but when the cats kill smaller animals and birds its natural and 'cute'.

    • @dusselkamp I'm getting sick of animal rights LL'rs. They only comment when an animal is hurt or killed, but when a human is tortured or murdered fingers silent. I'm starting to wonder who the sane people are here.

  • Well I suppose this is a better way to get rid of all those strays than to sell them by the ship load to china for dinner.

  • whilst I'm not calling bs -I will say it looks like the owl only has one set of talons on the cat, you can clearly see a toe and talon sticking out (kind've like a penis ;)
I would think as soon as the cat hit ground it would dash off mighty quick. Then again, those talons could no doubt do serious damage, as they could easily pierce a lung or other organ when dealing with a chest cavity of that small size.

  • nah, i don't buy it. a owl like this preys on mice, hamsters, small birds, little rodents. it would never try to prey on a cat. wildcats on the other hand would try to get a bite on a bird this size. I think this pic is photoshopped pic of a wild cat which got caught on those photo-traps (scared by the *click!* he jumps) in the woods and someone copy-n-pasted an owl into it.

    • @osso

Owls take larger prey all the time. A cat is well within its capacity.

    • @Waderman rofl, just look at that owl. if you know birds, you know that its feathers make most part of its appearance. that owl could not in 10 years carry something like that cat.
