I heard the guy who got the role as the robot, he often get work all over Hollywood in many films simply because he owned his own gorilla suit. He would just show up to the beginning of a production in the suit and get hired.

I saw that movie as a kid on the late show. It was a close runner up to "Plan 9 from Outer Space" for Worst Movie Ever.
Trivia: the cave we caught glimpsed in that clip is one of the most frequently used natural outdoor sets in Hollywood and is located just underneath the giant letters overlooking the city. It is the same cave the Batmobile used to emerge from in the old Batman television series.

I think I have enough loose change in my pocket to cover the entire cost of the FX budget for that film.

"Robot Monster is a 1953 American science fiction film made in 3-D by Phil Tucker. It is frequently considered one of the worst films ever made.
The budget did not allow for a robot costume as intended so director Phil Tucker used his friend George Barrows who had his own gorilla suit to play Ro-Man. Phil Tucker added the helmet."

One of the worst films ever made. I think Mystery Science 3000 screened the film, with their piss-takes as it went along - just to keep it interesting). Truly a dire movie.. As mentioned below, the producer had no money for a robot outfit and used a gorilla suit and a old diving helmet to represent the robot. Ed Wood would have been proud. :)
