I remember a doco made years ago by George Lucas where he reveals how the sound effect for the Tie-Fighter lasers were made by hitting a high tension wire rope with a shifting spanner. At the time it was better than anything computer generated

This is exactly how sound engineers in Star Wars made the laser sound, it may have been Lucas himself. They were striking long, large metal tension cords (think long electrical tension wires), and they recorded the sounds with hi-def mics.
