SALISBURY, Md.- A 21-year-old Salisbury man has been found guilty in Wicomico County Circuit Court of beating and raping a woman last spring.
Twenty-one-year-old Billy Jay Jones was convicted Monday of first- and second-degree rape, third-degree sex offense and second-degree assault.
Wicomico Assistant State's Attorney Elizabeth Ireland said that on March 29, Jones beat and raped the 24-year-old victim in the Smith Street home where Jones and the victim lived together. Ireland said that the morning after the attack, the victim sought help from a friend who contacted the Life Crisis Center where a counselor directed her to the hospital.
Before rendering his verdict, Judge W. Newton Jackson commented from the bench that he found the victim's testimony credible and corroborated with other state witnesses. At the time the rape occurred, Jones was on parole for second-degree burglary.
Sentencing will occur in the next 30 days. Jones faces a potential life sentence on the first-degree rape count.
The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, told WBOC that she is undergoing therapy as a result of the incident. She also said she is still experiencing nightmares because of what happened.
