Is College a Scam or what

I thought this rant was interesting.

I have a kid going to Baylor "third year" at about 120K so do not get me started.

I have no college degree "high school drop out, got my GED in the Army" , and some of my peers consider me a successful business man. Me , well 60 hour work weeks and just trying to make enough to retire comfortable “not counting on my social security” .

  • Universities would dramatically lower their costs if the Fed stopped loaning money to every idiot out there. So yes, this is a scam.

    • @Blue3tar

You bet. Student loans drive up the cost of tuition because you're basically giving students purchasing power beyond their means.

  • Yup. Colleges and universities are private businesses. They have no interest in whether their students get jobs or not. Acceptance rates for programs aren't matched with available job numbers etc. That's why they accept hundreds of students for things like sociology: they don't care whether the job prospects are slim to none. Once they've got their money, that's all that matters.

A lot of people who go to university would be better off in a trade or other educational venture

  • for every Dell, Gates and Branson, there are 100,000 people who didn't get a degree and would be better off (job opportunities and salary) if they had.

The exception is not the rule.

College is way way overpriced and student debt is likely the next bubble to burst, but it makes a big difference when an employer is considering your resume.

    • @nkdmansam Thanks for making some sense. Like the US will somehow raise our standards (any) globally by buying into this kind of shit!

    • @eeep - Thank You - Never thought about it like that , just figured as a parent it was my obligation to give my kid every chance to succeed in life. I think “for the most part” a college degree is a HUGE ADVANTAGE in the work force these days. It defiantly makes a difference in the pay scale , when your out job hunting ………

  • college is basically baby/teen sitting for 80% of students who havent a fucking clue what they are doing at that time in their life.

  • I dropped out of college when I was 23 to start working at an engineering company full time. I started in sales and was trained in Solidworks. Been here 11 years and make enough money to live comfortably. If only I hadn't wasted those first few years at college I would be that much ahead of the game.

  • college since the 60's has had the biggest part of teachers and professors that are Marxist and teach their students the Marxist ways, and grade them accordingly. they re-wright history as they go along to fit their agenda, by doing so they have destroyed a child's mind and indoctrinated them in into being communist. It's not bad enough for them to do such a thing, they have to make you pay outrageous amounts of money for them to do so. the outcome is always the same. After they graduate, they go More..

  • now go all year listing all the high school drop outs who have no careers and no stable income.

  • You are a man who has earned our respect sir. You did it the old-fashioned way, you earned it by working at an honest job!

      - On a side note. What is this "sir" stuff that I see a few people using. I suspect it's because you may think it's cute (it's not). Whatever the reason, it makes you sound like a servant, or an underling. It also sounds a bit like brown nosing. Just saying.

    • @IamCanadian It's an expression from the old days used to acknowledge another persons dignity. It is passe in todays world because there are few who earn it and even fewer who understand the concept.

    • @downhill2400
      - I think it became passé because society became less formal, and to an extent, less polite. Todays society is filled with selfserving individuals. I too, miss the polite society. With that aside, the way it comes across, in your comments, is not flattering for yourself. I'm telling you that, the same way I might tell you, you have a "kick me" sign on your back, or a booger hanging out of your nose (haha). Anyway, who am I? It's just my opinion.

  • Ask people how much college applies to their current job.

Find most say, you learn on the job.

    Posted Jul-18-2012 By

    • @heydoin depends what you learned in college...lawyers, doctors, engineers ,and sciences(i include natural sciences and monetary sciences) all need college...the rest shouldn't waste their time

  • "a scam" until you see "any degree" required for the lowest of jobs.

    Posted Jul-18-2012 By

  • The benefit and overall main reason for a college degree is basically you've proven that you are disciplined enough to pass through the curriculum, and now you've got a piece of paper to prove it. That's almost like saying you can only be fit if you go through Army boot camp, and just because it's hard, it's held in high regards, THE highest regard, just cause everyone agrees that it is and it's respectable. Like the guy said, our system is archaic. The old system doesn't work in this new world More..

    • @Rodriuni

I heard that. College basically proves that you can learn and be consistent with that (and of course you do have that gained knowledge).

  • Is college a scam? No. Are students scamming themselves by taking stupid class offerings that gain them nothing they couldn't gain by reading one or two books? Yes. There are many majors and many skills to be learned in college, even in the much-maligned humanities. There are also many courses that are complete wastes of time. Should colleges be offering these courses? Sure. If people are willing to pay a few thousand dollars for something that is worthless because it is entertaining to More..

    • @Lone_Wolf - You are 100% right , I wanted my son to go to a local community college "for selfish reasons" and then after two years go to Baylor. I do not know the exacts of the details, but Baylor will not let accept you if you go to a community college.

  • The first 2 years of schooling is pretty much the same in Universities as it is in Community Colleges so at least get your AA for cheaper there then transfer. Also ITT is a bunch of twats. You cannot transfer any of those stinking credits over to another school.

    • @TB-303 That's what I did. It was $100 less a credit to go to the community college for my generals than to take them at the university.
