IDA TOWNSHIP, Michigan - An 84-year-old Michigan man is recovering after the small plane he
was piloting crash-landed into a corn field after becoming entangled by a power line. The dramatic crash was caught on camera from inside the cockpit by Ian Zawacki, the 20-year-old grandson of the pilot, Wilbert Matthes. Matthes, of Ida, Mich., and the owner of the KitFox Series 7 plane, was approaching the landing strip of a private airport in Raisinville Township, Mich., around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when the accident occurred. Monroe County Sheriff officials said the plane’s landing gear caught a power line along a corn field on the north side of the airfield, located in the southeast part of the state. The entanglement caused the experimental plane to nose dive into the corn field. Both Matthes and his grandson, onboard the plane as his co-pilot, were taken to the hospital as precaution but suffered only minor injuries, sheriff’s officials sad.
