During the Iran-Iraq war, the U.S. shot down a civilian aircraft, killing 290 civilians. According to the U.S. they thought it was a F14. That is interesting, because the U.S. ship that shot down the civialn aircraft was the most advanced ship the U.S. had, and the civialian aircraft is almost three times larger than the F14.
