Big Ass Spider
Found this on my deck last night. Does anybody know what the hell it is?
It was about as big as my thumb and all the little lumps on her abdomen
were little baby spiders. Once I sprayed her they all fell off and died
and she actually had a much thinner abdomen than it first appeared. I
wish I got video but everything happened too fast and it was dark. She
got away before I could snap a pic without her brood attached.

Looks like a pretty common wolf-spider. No reason to kill her.

Should have left it alone as they are keen on eating other bugs and do not attack humans and will eat termites, ants and other small pest like fleas if they can catch them. They are actually good to have in ur lawn. Think of these as the sucker fish from a fish tank.

Yeah, I feel bad now. If I had the time I would have posted before spraying. Damn.

Don't kill those. They are not a species that can do any harm to you.
Quite the opposite, Wolf spiders are relentless hunters of the buggies
you don't want around.

You shouldn't have killed it. When those spiders are carrying their young, they release a pheromone upon death that attracts other adult females. If this was anywhere near your house, you're going to have an infestation.

No, but my wife is a woman and it ran across her foot. I would have tried to get it back into the woods near the house but the deck is below ground level and I couldn't get her to go towards the beach and eventually up to the tree line. Harmless or not, my wife was freaking. If you wandered onto my deck and she started shrieking, I would slit your throat too to make it stop.

You should educate your wife that spiders and snakes and everything else that creeps and crawls are beneficial, not out to murder her. Seriously. Ignorance is bliss.

Spiders are good to have around. They eat flies, fly larvae, insect eggs (mosquitoes, etc.) and they don't spread diseases. You're going to get bit on your nutsack by a funnelweb for doing that.

@Ohyawellfuku Seriously. They are beneficial, especially with gardens. Last summer I let a large one live by the front door next to the porch light, it would build the web at sundown, and remove it the next morning. It was nice because it trapped the bugs attracted to the light, had less insects bothering me last year.

@DroogInPhoenix +1, spiders in general are a good insect and keep other not so good insects at bay around the house.

I would have just left it alone. Even when I get spiders in my condo I just catch them on a newspaper and toss them outside. They catch all sorts of tiny flies that try and invade my condo.

@nonad - what's done is done, but you could've just walked away till she got to where she was going. or alternately just relocated her yourself. http://www.ehow.com/how_516_catch-release-spiders.html

I wish I had known more about the spider at that point. I have a rule, if an animal of any kind stays out of my living space, more power to him. Once they come into my living space, game on. Probably the same as if I invaded their living space.
