Interview with artist Saab Lofton in Seattle
Interview with Saab Lofton
Lofton
I'm engaged in a unique form of activism
I'm boycotting day jobs
I will limit my means of income to things that befit my labor of love which is radical story telling.
In otherwords if I can't tell a story for a living, if I can't sell one of my comics for a living, then I won't live at all.
So no flipping burgers,no stocking shelves at Walmart. Eithe
More..r I make it as an author, or I don't make it at all.
So My life is lterally on the line here.
Davis
I can respect that, people who do art and do creative things, people don't understand this commit that we make when we choose to do art.
Lofton
It is quicker easier and more seductive to simply take whatever comes along, especially if you have a family, which is why I'm glad I ducked that bullet.
Davis
Do you want to show me anything about your art or comic, journalism?
Lofton
Check my website saablofton.org, the website serves as a portfolio that explains everthing, why I'm out here why I do what I do, it also explains what is at stake, because as long as 17 to 20 billion is wasted on nuclear missles every year then there is that much less money to be investing into jobs, into the arts, things we know in fact that we need and so by refusing to work a day job, I'm refusing to let the rich and powerful fall off the hook. If the rich and the powerful realize if those that live in MC Hammer, MTV ______ mansions
based on the sales of nuclear weapons. If those types know that all they got to do is just tell people like Marie Antoinette said let them eat cake, if the military industrial complex know that people can be dismissivly be told that they just flip burgers for a living then that divorces them of any obligation to invest in jobs, invest in the arts and so by laying my life on the line and saying I would rather die than do anything else rather than what I was born to do.
I obligate them to invest in subsidized housing so that artist can afford to be artists only. It very complicated and can not be summed up in a thity second sound bite which is why I always tell people to log on to the website saablofton.org
Davis
Thanks Saab, Davis out. Less..

Doing what his people do best, running his mouth and complaining that he is too good to work; so everybody else must care for him.

Sarcasm and ignorance ...
1) I'm NOT an Obama voter, I voted for (and had the privilege of interviewing) Cynthia McKinney.
2) Whoever has the icon of Che's head being blown away is the one who's psychotic. If you have a problem with Che killing enemies of the people, then a) join the movement to abolish the death penalty, and b) don't ever let me catch you watching The Boondock Saints or reading a Punisher comic. You can't have it both ways, hypocrite.
3) I'm NOT "too good to work," what I do IS work and only a Rush Limbaugh ditto head can't see that -- also too, EVERYBODY TAKES CARE OF EVERYBODY; we live in a society! Besides, if you REALLY want to see a bunch of lazy welfare cheats, look no further than the corporate elite. Can we say "bail out"?
It truly says something about privilege that the only folks who have time to sit around and make snide comments are (usually white) right-wingers. Speaks volumes. I'm a professional author -- that's why I'M by a computer -- what's your excuse?

Hi Saab, welcome to LiveLeak, take the good with the bad!Cheers, J, nice to interview you!

NO, I woN'T take the good with the bad; I'm NOT a masochistic doormat. Someone tries to ruin my rep and take food out of my mouth as a result? They better be prepared to reap the whirlwind. Besides, thanks to FOX News, these Nazis ALREADY have PLENTY of free speech as it is. In order to truly balance the scales, Prof. Noam Chomsky would have to be on the air non-stop for the next two thousand years ...
(There's a group called F.A.I.R., Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting, and it specializes in exposing the extent to which right-wingers dominate column space and the airwaves -- check out its findings if you don't believe me.)
I already had to deal with a truck load of this crap last year with an online stalker who was psychotically obsessed with me (see my website for more info) over these very same issues, and as I said, only someone spoiled and privileged has the luxury of being online all day in order to leave coy, smug comments anyway.
Free speech ain't just a matter of the existence of the First Amendment; it's not just a quality, it's also a QUANTITY. In other words, it's numerical as well. So if Rush Limbaugh's airtime is paid for by the rich/powerful (because he speaks for the rich/powerful) and is able to reach 20 million people every day, that means he has MORE free speech than, say, Amy Goodman from Democracy Now (who MAY reach HALF a million people per day IF she's lucky). With a David Vs. Goliath disparity like that, is it any wonder so many of these fools are echoing Limbaugh with all their talk about how I'm supposedly a "bum" when I probably work harder than ANY of them ..?
I'm not for censoring anybody, but I sure as Hell ain't gonna stand by and let even more lies be spread. I'm not like Dr. King; I'm more of a Black Panther, so if you come at me the wrong way, you run the risk of getting your feelings hurt.
