A Clermont gas-station clerk was shot in the chest Thursday night during a struggle with an armed robber.According to Clermont police, the clerk, Ajay Manhnani, is in stable condition this morning following surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Detectives are hoping to question him soon.
Officers responded the Sunoco, 477 E. State Road 50 in Clermont, just after 8:40 p.m. Thursday to a holdup alarm and several 911 calls, and found Manhnani shot.
Manhnani apparently was able to dial 911 before passing out.
Sgt. Brent Joyner said the masked and gloved suspect walked into the store with a gun and jumped on the counter, but was pushed back down by the clerk. The suspect then went around the counter and fired shots, striking Manhnani.
Joyner said Manhnani was the only one in the store at the time the suspect came in and there aren't any details on how the robber fled.
He added detectives believe the suspect ran off without getting any money.
Joyner said from they have seen from the surveillance video a good description could not be obtained. He said the store is closed as detectives try to recover better video of the incident.
