When we truly realise how insignificant we are, how insignificant the things that trouble us are...then we will be significant.

Personally, I'm agnostic. Which is the only honest position.
The egocentric arrogance of religion is breathtaking. If there is a creator I'm sure he/she will find all those religious people who have created a god from their human image, very amusing.

@allyssa >Personally, I'm agnostic. Which is the only honest position.
You're being dishonest with that very statement because you can't know what other people experience.
>The egocentric arrogance of religion is breathtaking.
Fallen man refuses to recognize anything higher than themselves. That is egocentric. Fallen man will recognize anything created to be bigger or higher than them (the universe, for instance), but will steadfastly refuse to recognize the Creator. People will worship More..

@Roll1981 There was no creator, and if there was it doesn't give a shit about us. That much is evident.

@reggie001 Obviously there is a Creator. You have to be almost mental incapacitated shallow to not see that. As for his care for us: we are fallen, yet there is common grace all around us. In the natural world, in human nature, in our needs being met, granted with the sweat of our brow. It's the children of the Devil who can't abide goodness and have to destroy and only create tyranny, suffering and death. They'll have their judgment day.

@Roll1981 I think you have to be shallow and closed minded to think that the only possibility is that the universe was created. And really small minded to think that, if there is a creator, it must be the God of the bible.

The bible is full to the brim with ridiculous stories yet christians believe every word of ot, they are definitely mentally challenged individuals.
If someone came along nowadays and said god appeared to him in a burning bush or gave him tablets with commandments on them he/she would get prescribed thorazine and that would be the end of the god shit. But seeing as the bible was written thousands of years ago this makes it beleiveable?? LOL at religious idiots. Very dangerous people indeed.

The problem with Sagan's argument is that the anthropocentric quality that he ascribes to our religion and the place that religion is supposed to occupy in explaining and controlling chaos are also precisely what science is today. Sagan is really so presumptuous about science to think that it doesn't fall back to what is familiar to us, that it is not constricted to a degree by our language and our past stories? Science behaves in the same way and fulfills the same role in these respects that More..

@buzzardist the difference between science and religion is testable evidence. Also I used to be an on-fire Christian. Once you dare to start questioning religion it will become obvious to you my friend that it's man-made. Ask yourself, where was God before Moses invented him in the Torah? Seriously, Moses created the whole thing and he borrowed from egyptian religion of which he was raised as an Egyptian prince - think about it, the Jews were slaves and not educated... pretty easy to make up More..

The problem with what you say is essentially the same problem I identify in Sagan's comments. Perhaps religion is, as you say, man-made. But if it is, science is also man-made. The philosophy and methodology behind science is of our own design. As with religion, we continually refine and reshape our science to better fit the world as we know it, and, perhaps unlike religion, science does have the wonderful ability to make measurable predictions that can be used to verify the accur More..

@buzzardist Science is man-made but it's more the discovery of reality. Meaning it was true before we discovered our system to measure it's truth. Gravity existed before Newton. Also your comment about the big bang is silly - believers have a hard time that something could come out of nothing but miss the obvious plank in their eye - where did God come from? It's just as much a tough question as the big bang. You're an atheist to every other god that man has created but you believe in the G More..
