Accused Child Molester Faces Charges after 14 Years

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A Desoto County man who was on the FBI's most wanted list next to Osama Bin Laden is scheduled to go on trial, Monday for repeatedly molesting two neighborhood girls.

The girls were 3 and 8 years old at the time. Now they say they have to re-live it all over again. The suspect, known to be linked to several militia and anti-government groups, has been on the run for 14 years. Now he could spend the rest of his life behind bars and one of the victim's mother's hopes he does.

“I could see the fear in her face,” said Monnie Nelson, one of the victim’s mother.

Nelson said she remembers the day, back in 1994, when her 8-year old daughter came to her with news no mother wants to hear.

“She said momma it's bad I can't tell you he said he'd kill me and you and daddy. I said no. No,” said Nelson.

Nelson said her daughter told her Edward Eugene Harper repeatedly molested her at his trailer home, parked at the Hernando Point Campground in Desoto County.

“My opinion as a mother? They ought to kill him,” said Nelson.

In 1994 Harper was indicted by a grand jury, he was arrested in Utah and brought back here to Desoto County. He made bond and skipped town again. The Nelson family had no idea.

“It's shocking, it's very painful,” said Nelson.

For 16 years the Nelson's thought Harper was in prison but he wasn't. In 2008, the FBI put the fugitive on their top 10 most wanted list side by side with Osama Bin Laden. Last year, he was arrested near Casper, Wyoming.

“Maybe he lived in the mountains and didn't bother anybody else, I hope he did,” said Nelson.

Nelson's daughter, now 25-years old, is serving time in prison for drugs. Nelson believes the alleged abuse led her down a dangerous path. But the 25-year old, at first frightened by the possibility of having to testify against Harper now welcomes it.

“She said I want him to look me in the eye. I want him to look at me and where I am,” said Nelson.

Harper is facing 13 charges, including sexual battery, conspiracy to commit sexual battery and fondling. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to 310 years in prison.
