[8/16/2012] South African riot police opened fire on striking miners armed with machetes and sticks at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine, killing at least a dozen men in the deadliest episode of a week of union violence.
Heavily armed officers backed by armored vehicles were laying out barbed wire barricades when they were outflanked by some of the estimated 3,000 miners massed on a rocky outcrop near the mine.
Police opened fire with automatic weapons on a group of men who burst out from behind a vehicle. The volley of bullets threw up clouds of dust, which cleared to reveal at least seven bodies lying on the ground.
It was not clear whether the police were fired upon. They appeared to be on edge and with rifles pointing forwards immediately before the incident. Reuters photographs showed spears and clubs lying near the bodies.
The SAPA domestic news agency said one of its reporters had counted 18 bodies near a squatter camp close to the mine, Lonmin's flagship platinum plant, which was forced to shut down on Tuesday because of the union unrest.
There has been no confirmation the death toll.
UPDATE: aljazeera had a camera that captured the incident from another angle

@anglosaxonwarlord petrol bomb and grenade attacks from the strikers too. The news outlets are already reporting that there are shades of apartheid in the way this was handled, lots of black Africans in the police force now though so can't blame whitey this time.

@anglosaxonwarlord This makes the news but I bet not much time will be dedicated to the two that were chopped up. News networks will want to keep the story as racist and inflammatory as possible.

Good you post this. It seems as if the miners are deliberately funneled between cars to trigger an outburst which then should justify the massacre.

South Africans are reeling in shock from this. This happened yesterday after days of protest from 3000 rioting miners, armed with machetes, axes and knives. They hacked to death ten people, including police and security guards. Ethically, what are the police to do when faced with 3000 armed miners rushing at them. The police are not properly trained to deal with this, but the awful fact is, rioters in this country are very often armed and dangerous and have no compunction in injuring and kill More..

@jenwe People don't just arm themselves and riot without a reason. Usually it's because they are being grossly exploited and their issues are being ignored. Since the action by police you risk the spectre of escalation, where the other side will better arm itself. Its the stuff that civil wars are made of. Better to address their problems with sincerity or face the music.

Although I understand the police were on edge as a result of the miners having killers within their ranks, their tactic of boxing them in was pretty fucked up. They essentially set them up.

Human lives are so cheap nowadays. People live to this age for them to have it taken away from them in a flash. These are people who have families, maybe dreams and stories to tell. Sad.

I agree with you and I don't think the cops did wrong but they did over react don't you think? If they have taken a bit of time half of these miners lives would have been saved maybe.

I don't even think they expected such response. The cops had to defend themselves but they did overreact and therefor all are dead when this could be solved with few dead maybe..

Criminals. Here, I'll write it slowly - c.r.i.m.i.n.a.l.s. Any armed thug who charges towards armed police whilst brandishing a club or a spear expects what? A talking-to? A wrist slap? No, once the thugs remove themselves from the law-abiding rest of us, they should not be treated the same way way we expect to be treated. I would not arm myself and run towards anyone with a gun. It's stupid. The arrogant miners taking the law into their own hands and threatening the police deserved to be shot a More..
