Aired from 1972 to 1977, 5 seasons 121 episodes. The pilot was based on the novel "Poor, Poor Ophelia" by Carolyn Weston.

Even though crime dramas were quite popular in the 70's this show is basically all Karl Malden and Michael Douglas, without them this would have been a flop. There was chemistry. When Douglas left the show in 1975 and was replaced with Richard Hatch (Yeah the Hatch that later starred on Battlestar Galactica) some chemistry was lost and the show subsequently lost it's ratings.

Not that Hatch is a bad actor, it was breaking up that duo that did it in. Michael Douglas had some success in 1975 with a movie he produced called "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" and felt that this new found success provided better opportunities, so he left the show. He later made a successful TV to film transition as you probably know.

This is one of those TV shows that starred a lot of people who later went on to become famous in TV and movies. Quinn Martin was a gatekeeper production company for many decades in show biz.
