The footage provided to a news network by former employees allegedly shows
contractors downing glasses of spirits, staggering around drunk and
wrestling semi-naked despite their firm apparently having a “zero tolerance”
policy to drink and drugs.


One of the company's senior officers is seen in a stupor and unable to speak
after apparently injecting himself with ketamine, a powerful anaesthetic.




The men were working for Jorge Scientific, an American
firm which has secured more than $1 billion (£625 million) of US government
work, including a $47 million contract in Kabul to train the Afghan police
in counter-insurgency efforts.


Two former employees who are now taking legal action against the company told
ABC News that the parties put lives at risk and were undetected by US
military officers who are supposed to oversee the contractors.

The company said it had taken “decisive action to correct the unacceptable
behaviour of a limited number of employees”. It had hired an outside
investigation team to find out what had gone wrong and several of those
shown in the video no longer worked for the firm, it said.


John Melson and Kenny Smith, who were employed as armed security officers,
told ABC News they had both resigned because their safety was being put at
risk.


"It was going against everything that we were trying to do over there,"
he told the network.


"It was like a frat house for adults. Some of them to the point where
they were passing out, there's firearms laying around, some of them still
carrying the firearms on them."


The whistle blowers said the heavy drinking was often led by the company’s
senior on-site executive, who encouraged the proceedings while keeping a
loaded pistol tucked into his trousers.


Those who chose not to take part were labelled cowards.


Drunk and stoned personnel would often throw live ammunition and fire
extinguishers into the flames of a bonfire and watch as they exploded, Mr
Smith and Mr Melson alleged.


The company's operations manual describes a "zero-tolerance for alcohol
and drug use" and says all staff must be on alert at all times in case
of attack.


The contractors were supposed to be overseen by American military officials,
but the whistle blowers said at least one female US Army major was a regular
visitor to drunken parties and often used a room for sexual liaisons.


A statement from the Nato-led coalition in Kabul said it took "all
allegations of inappropriate behaviour by contractors and service members
very seriously.


“As a result, the US Army's Criminal Investigation Division is looking into
the allegations.”
