Lights went out for an hour across the globe today as millions of people took part in Earth Hour, an international movement to coffe action on climate change. The event kicked off in the Australian city of Sydney, where the authorities turned off the lights on the city's iconic Opera house and Harbour Bridge at 2030 local time.
The global grassroots movement began in Sydney two years ago, when 2.2 million people switched off their lights. It has since grown into a global movement and millions of people in almost 4000 cities, towns, villages and localities across the planet took part in today's event.
Lights will go out today at 371 landmarks, including Egypt's Giza pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, the Vatican, the Acropolis, the casino strip in Las Vegas, the Empire State Building in New York and Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.
