WGN news team accidently reports on a fake plane crash

Sure, Chicago isn't accustomed to having as many film crews around as, say, New York or Los Angeles but: Really?

WGN Morning News anchors Larry Potash and Robin Baumgarten scrambled
to report on helicopter footage of an apparent plane crash near 29th
Street and Martin Luther King Drive around 8 a.m. Friday morning. A few
minutes later, after considerable ad-libbing, they learned that the
apparent wreckage had actually been staged for the NBC series "Chicago
Fire."

    • @Blackhawk067 -- The media has the responsibility to investigate and then report the news. Not the other way around. The female reporter appeared genuinely disappointed that this "juicy story that they were the first to break" was a complete fabrication.

    • @Blackhawk067 While you are correct that it was a stupid thing to say, it's pretty obvious they both felt a bit stupid and she said it in jest. After working as an associate in a newsroom in LA for many years, it is common when scenes are filmed for movies/tv and could cause considerable panic that the information gets passed on to news stations so as not to cause a panic.

And yes, there isn't much real journalism left as it is corporate owned. Do you need me to tell that you water is wet also? More..

  • "Hello?..Yes, hello...Im the producer of this very expensive TV show being shot this afternoon on King St. I was just calling your TV channel to let you know that we will be doing a shoot on King today and to NOT REPORT A REAL PLANE CRASH. I thought I would take time out of my busy day, so that you guys wouldnt look stupid on the air. Gotta go now, 34 other stations to call to tell them all whats news and what isn't. Have a great day!"

  • "They might want to tell the news folks".

Um, no. A movie production company has a long acquired permit to film at a certain location and time which triggers the city or county officials who approved the permit to inform local law enforcement, police, medical, fire, utilities and the local community to properly prepare. A press release in the local newspaper and/or media web page for the community is released. The local media should not put on live air any video which is not vette More..

  • "They might want to tell the news folks"? No, you fucking media hack...you might want to ask questions before you play the game of 'we were the first to report'.

  • This is a perfect example of how television news operates.

"Someone told someone something and then they told us something so now we're going to tell you something even though we have no idea what is going on."

It's not news...it's commercials interrupted by sensationalism.

  • Thats funny. This is why you dont put up live pictures and assume you know whats happening on the news. You could be right 99% of the time, but that 1% can get you on LL.

  • One more example of how bad the media is in the US. They jump to conclusions before they have all the info, just so they can be first at the scene. They make up news that doesn't exist. Outrageous.

    • @I wont grow up ive noticed on slow days the MSM like to report old news from months and years ago. ive seen it happen about 2 or 3 times. it seems nobody even realizes they do that because ive never heard others talk about it.

  • They are idiots. The other stations were reporting on the staged crash for the show, even saying that there was production equipment everywhere... No excuse.

  • This wasn't a case of a studio not doing their dilligence. For all we know, the studio might have known, but the chopper crew didn't read the morning memo and was like "HOLY COW GET A SHOT OF THAT!!! I'LL CALL IT IN!!!".

Sensationalism yes, but still a fun shot of a TV show worthy of local morning news.

  • Yes, the media is all important and it is everybody's DUTY to report to them before we do anything. God forbid they do some investigation before they blurt crap out on the air.
