The occupy movement and other socialist/anarchist/anti-capitalist groups joined what is now called the biggest revolt in Canadian history (Maple Spring).

All started by a government proposal to increase tuition fees. Students took to the streets 3 months ago even though the French Canadian province of Quebec has the lowest tuition rates in North America and would retain that position with the increase. The protesters were further enraged when their government passed an emergency law called bill 78 a few days ago in an attempt to crack down on the protests.

  • It was actually 100k according to media and police sources. 250k is only on youtube, heh. The only person to claim 250k was their nutcase leftist leader GND.

People were protesting for like 4 causes in there, it's not all about the spoiled students.

And anyone that refers to this as 'Maple spring' should go tell the Syrians about it, and see how long they live. A real joke...

  • Why is it so damn hard to understand that people there already pay the highest taxes in the world, mainly for the education and health systems. I guess if you already paid 40%-60% of your salary in taxes you wouldn't be happy to see them double the tuition on the basis of "it's lower than anywhere else in Canada".

I'll pay your fuc$%ng higher tuition if you lower my taxes. I'm just not going to pay twice for the same damn thing.

    • @donnoshit You can't bring up the point that "we pay the highest taxes" then deny the exact same point in "it's lower anywhere else in Canada" after.

The fact is, in Quebec, the average cost of living has gone up, every taxes have gone up, why shouldn't the tuition fees go up? Plus, if the students actually work like 20h/week they end up being refunded and credited everywhere, and it ends up free.

And their "strike" is illegal, was voted by raised hands votes with More..

    • @donnoshit i agree at the end of the day i have worked over half the year for free to pay taxes , and we get barely anything out of it. in quebec middle class is taxed into poverty. I work over 70 hours a week just to pay the bills and mortgage on a 160 000 dollar house. Ill never have time for a family of to live oh well. that is why suicide rates in quebec are the highest

  • Solution: Judging from the comments below, most Americans think anyone who protests outside of a "comment box", is a "unemployed liberal hippie"... so do what any good capitalist would do:

Double the price of the electricity that Quebec sells to the Northern States to cover the cost of raised tuition. It will take the protests off the Canadian streets and make all the FOX NEWS digesting morons quiet.

Americans wont mind because they all love capitalism and understand the More..

Haha, somebody I can relate to on this forum! They will enjoy their neoliberal capitalism until the retractions associated with the unsustainability of unregulated production hits them.

At some point, I see the Western world adopting a highly regulated form of capitalism, akin to the Chinese model... maybe.

The whole idea of purchasing or spending such amounts on a military is disturbing. Globalization is here, the days of mass-army wars are over. Furthermore, democracies do not go to war with other democracies, that's political science doctrine (the democratic or liberal peace).

But when the economy is not doing so well, the neoliberal government has to step in and use the resources that the private-sector has sitting idly by. Increased military spending is one way.

That would be only after having a chance to go to college for a reasonable price. Your parents have a load of cash and can send you to a great school or college? Good for you. For the rest of us, we take low paid jobs in order to have access and pay for our higher education. Would you like fries with that?

  • You fucking french-fry pieces of shit. You are the only province in Canada who thinks what you are doing is right.

Try moving to B.C. and see how you like it?

I am SO full of your province's shit, imagine how much more you'd be paying if we weren't drowning you with money trying to appease your sorry asses or if you'd separated from the rest of Canada (which you've tried to do more than once.)

Show some fucking pride and respect for your country! Jesus Christ. These riots are only costing you More..

Your the type of person who'd follow your country off a cliff too, wouldn't you? I live in Ontario, and like most university students, we feel that protesting increases in tuition costs are certainly justified.

But listen, it is not necessarily more money that is required; rather, its smarter government spending.

As for "pride and respect for your country," I love my country, but I love people much much more.

Why be so nationalistic, it's good to have some pride, but More..

    • @Jeremy_

What's wrong with a nude protest? Again, our norms are socially constructed.

And nobody has made anything of me, I don't see how I should be concerned how others think of me, based upon the actions of a small minority of people whom I don't even know. Is it because it reflects the Country in a poor light?

If someone is so simple as to draw generalizations of the majority of people from the actions of the minority, then they can think what they want, because they are probably s More..

Ugh... I don't want to waste my time developing a real argument - so instead I will just redirect you to CBC. They have several articles, if you look at the comments you will see very strong arguments for either side (it appears that which claims the protest is losing focus and purpose and was never desirable in the first place is that which is most favoured by the community.)

I.e, their infamous nazi solutes (failed attempt to mock the police) and such, destroying tourism (read the More..

Bah, our social norms were socially constructed in the first place, what the community wants is a relative concept anyhow, and tends to change with the times. For instance, look at beach attire from the 18th century, and compare it to 21st century norms. Things change, and community opinion changes. The main point is, to each their own.

Anyhow, we have so much stigma of having to have the perfect bodies, that many people are self conscious or otherwise concerned about the way that More..
