This was the German American Bund. A lot of first and second generation Germans in America got sucked into it in the 1930s. The lure was the opportunity to reassert pride in heritage in the face of anti-German prejudice following WWI.
It was also a front for Nazi political subversion and espionage. But not very successful. The FBI was all over these guys like a cheap suit. People associated with the Bund, like the aviator Charles Lindbergh, ruined their reputations and could not be trusted duri More..

@john1054 Amazing what a language could do for you in the war
SOE used to send Oxford academics in Ancient Greek (pipes and books) in gliders and subs to occupied Greece, Crete etc...to organise partisans and resistance

@b0ldfart 'Funny' often denotes 'odd' in the Queen's English, as opposed to 'humorous'

@b0ldfart Yup. Funny can also be interpreted in British English as weird, unusual or out of the ordinary.
"he's a bit funny" translates as he's a bit weird.

July '39. Literally just weeks before the invasion of Poland.
I wonder how many of these youths wound up fighting in Normandy in '44 as part of the 12th SS division once they turned 17?
