@drivinscool I was imagining a US soldier trying to use it to climb up a mud shack in the desert of Afghanistan...

Hey, the first secondary use for this thing: "Sucker punch" a hole into any wall quickly and effectively!

@unique sheep
To be fair, I'm pretty sure the military sponsored the competition and put up the $100k prize money. But, kind of like a lot of NASA inventions, I'm sure it will trickle down to police, fire/rescue and eventually the general public.

Sure, almost anything groundbreaking was funded by or for military (purposes) in the first place.
I really do share unique sheep's sentiment that the motivation behind it all isn't really an honorable one, though.

Its so cool living in the future sometimes...I used to live in the past, what I call BG (before google) life was different. when you needed to find some info you had to go to the library and actually find the right book, without reading most of it out of thousands of books. Or when the phone co owned your phone and you actually had to dial a number (you hated people with lots of 0's in their #'s) Or if you missed your game or favorite tv you had to settle for highlights and hope for a re-run.. More..

In the news story I first saw they mentioned that one of the competition rules was that the students only had one hour to train the commandos on how to use the device. It's awfully loud and a little bulky, but I'm sure the $100k they won will help them solve those minor issues

Navy seals will love using those things to stealthily climb on board ships in the middle of the night, straight out of the water.
Now they just need to come up with some sort of diversion , such as a very loud helicopter engine over head . (end sarc)
