Unfortunately there are still graphite moderated reactors still in use! (one in Lithuania I believe).
Incidentally the Windscale reactor was a Magnox graphite reactor which caught on fire briefly in the 60s! Its absolutely amazing how many bullets we've dodged throughout the years!

Yep, cheap way to utilize natural Uranium without the need for a heavy water moderator.

What happened was the thing blew up and Russia tried to keep that fact quiet until it couldnt no more due to the radiation fallout that was happening all over Europe. Simple as that.

I was in Germany when that all went down. The fresh milk was the first thing to be removed from the grocer's shelves.
The consumtion of wild forest mushrooms also came to a halt.

That was fucked up. I traveled to Croatia in July of 86 & was warned not to eat any unwashed fresh veggies & completely avoid drinking any milk. The scope of this disaster was much more widespread than I knew at the time.

Those two volunteers that "never returned". Were they, like, boiled to nothingness? Or something?

By what metric? Because I cant think of any possible way in which it could be regarded as worse than Chernobyl, at least not to date.

At least we (USSR) got a plenty space to rellocate. Japan is lacks any space for maneuvers.
He said by a long shot. Wait for a million to die.

@grifo
The prevailing winds over Japan take the fallout out to sea instead of over a densely populated continental landmass.

Thank god! These men already suffered more than anyone. They must hate word "nuclear".
