Conservatives Selectively Edit Obama’s Speech To Claim He Hates Small Businesses

Attempting to change the subject from the latest scandal over Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital,
conservatives have seized on new fodder for the narrative that Obama is
secretly out to destroy small businesses. Fox and Friends on Monday
morning aired a clip
from an Obama campaign speech in Roanoke, Virginia, in which he says,
“If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else did
that.”

Some of you may have seen more than a few submissions on LL spouting this exact lie.

The sound bite soon reverberated throughout conservative media outlets. Fox News later ran the headline, “Obama Insults Small Business Owners,” and House Speaker John Boehner scoffed, “He said that because he has no idea what it takes to build or run a small business.”

Of course, Obama’s supposedly insulting comment is somewhat different in context. The full text of his speech,
rather than denigrate small business, challenged the idea that wealthy
and successful individuals have never benefited from government
programs:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.
There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to
create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you
to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.
The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research
created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the
Internet.

Without the context, Obama’s point that individual effort is
bolstered by community systems is completely lost. The idea is nothing
new; Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) made very similar comments that went viral in September of last year. Indeed, far from denigrating small business owners, Obama has cut taxes on small businesses 17 times.
Deliberately editing Obama out of context is not a new tactic for conservatives. In one blatant example, a recent Romney campaign ad
quoted Obama saying, “If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going
to lose,” a quote Obama was in fact using to criticize then-candidate
John McCain for his refusal to discuss the economic crisis in 2008.Just in case anyone wanted more proof that Fox News is basically a propaganda arm of the batshit insane neo-conservatives.

  • """"If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen."""" is a stupid statement in ANY context.

  • Fuck this editing, it's irrelevant. He hates business, small-medium-large and proved it with Obamacare. He's going to decimate small and medium businesses with this piece of shit bill, he's going to drive up rates, and he's going to force companies on the 50 employee threshold to lay off employees, downsize their operations, and cease expansion. This "editing" claim is preposterous.

The "editing claim" is not preposterous. It's real. I think what you're trying to say is that it's irrelevant because you'll believe what you want to believe.

Tell you what. Spend ten minutes trying to tell yorba he's a dick, and see what happens.

You, possum, are the type that spends their day shopping job applications to men and business owners like yorba. They didn't build their companies based on the kind of contributions you make to society.

What are you on about? Do you know me? Or anything about me? It's these assumptions based on nothing that I keep seeing over and over on here. I think a lot of you folks on here are just rage-filled nutjobs.
For what it's worth, I started a small business in 2004 and still have it today. It's still really small, but it's still mine. I have yet to see either party be especially helpful either.

I disagree. What he's saying is a pretty well established line of thinking that admits that the "American Dream" is one that depends on some infrastructure. That infrastructure is paid for by our taxes and is guaranteed by the federal gov't. Now, the contribution of this can certainly be debated, but I can't think of a single person who "made it" without taking advantage of some of the opportunities inherent in living in America. The DEGREE to which that infra More..

  • OK, let's pick apart the full text, then.

"Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet."

BS. It was started as a way to link and communicate between nodes, nothing more. The notion of making money wasn't introduced until many years later.

(And before someone replies, it wasn't for nuclear survivability, either, tho this was introduced later, too.)

Exactly. Originally, it was to facilitate rapid, redundant communications, mainly for defense. Capitalists saw, and invested at personal risk, in the possibilities.

  • Here's a bit more context for you there K of rape: Despite the claims of a fellow dem lib, AlGore, the internet was a project of the Pentagon in the fifties as a means of rapid communication reinforced by redundant nodes and systems. Capitalists took note and both saw and invested in the possibilities.

Its a classic American example. The feds set the rules and then got out of the way. Capitalists put their own, personal money at risk and made the internet what it is today. Same with highwa More..

R-money's shady as fuck business practices, lying, and eagerness to fire people to make a profit are what make him a bad candidate- not his success.

This arrogant asshole forgets that the government creates NOTHING without its ability to tax, print or borrow (to the tune of $TRILLIONS in debt).
