The IDF announced on Monday that it would transfer the remaining Fatah refugees granted safe haven in Israel to the West Bank town of Ramallah. The announcement marks a reversal of the previous decision to return them to Gaza and follows overnight discussions between Defense Ministry officials and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. As Fatah promises revenge, many point out that the Hilles clan was Fatah’s last stronghold in the Strip. And while officially, the raid against the Hilles compound was meant to identify the perpetrators of last Friday’s attack in Gaza, which killed five senior Hamas members and a girl, in reality the raid was the final step in the completion of Hamas' 2007 takeover of the Gaza Strip. Saturday’s crackdown eliminated the last remnants of the Fatah movement in Gaza and conveyed a clear message to any potential rivals of Hamas. 08/04/08
