  • Apophis got some attention from the scientific community briefly in 2004. By 2006, revised calculations had lowered the odds of an impact to 1:250,000. That DeGrasse Tyson made a fear-mongering statement like this in 2008 really lowers my opinion of him.

    • He did specify that it must pass through the keyhole in order to impact Earth. If it does not pass through that keyhole then it will miss.

    • Don't be a jerk. He wasn't fear-mongering. This was from a lecture on several topics including NEO's.

Neil is a hilarious guy, who would never be the fear-mongering type. I've had the pleasure of meeting him many times... he's the man.

    • I agree he's hilarious. I'll laugh the next time he peddles some apocalyptic nonsense, too.

  • i think this is the least of our worries right now...

    • Um. I'd say if this was true, its probably the biggest worry we have on our plate. Whats our main problems? Unemployment? Thats beginning to lower. The economy is stabilizing. If this thing happens, chances are it will not only kill possibly millions of people, but will wipe out the entire west coast. That will in turn cause economic problems and half a dozen other broad ones. Its been a year since the earthquake in Hatti and the country still is in shambles. This will be 50 times more destruct More..

    • To be fair Haiti was in shambles before the quake too.

  • So we have 25 years to blast it out of space then right? Shpouldnt be a problem.

    • You obviously dont have a clue about the speed at which things travel in space. Let alone the concept of the mass involved.

Even our biggest nukes are useless. At most they would just make it worse.

    • Perhaps some type of gravitational device would do the trick. There's gotta be something in the secret vaults that can save mankind.

    • As I stated we have 25 years to work on the idea. I didnt say it would happen tomorrow and aside from that my comment was meant to be a bit sarcastic. Chill out.

    • actually this interview cuts off short, because I think someone asks him "why not just blow it up" and his reply was something like "so instead of having one object coming at earth, you want to have 1000 of smaller objects rain down on earth"

Those small rocks will cause the same if not more damage as a big asteroid. Also you're pretty much making sure that our sattilites will be blown out of space.

    • It only takes a slight gravitational "nudge" by an artificial unmanned object to change its course, setting its impact into the heart of the sun.

    • We`ve got the destruction of the planet in 2012, we have the prospects of WW3, we have the threat of Global warming raising the water level and flooding huge areas, the threat of Muslims making War in other countries, pollution of the water ways, seas, the depletion of our natural resources, the depletion of fish in the oceans, maybe the possibility of Wars over Oil, food and water AND now this?!?! - Fuck! this planet has a LOT to look forward to.

    • Nastrodamus said same thing about 1999 so don't believe that kinda stuff, he was right with alot of predictions but was wrong with alot of predictions too.

  • The Left coast is doomed apparently.
If it's not destroyed by an 8 or 9 mag quake, this asteroid may flush their bowl, twice.
