TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Three state leaders have all called for the National Guard to be deployed to Arizona in response to the cruel murder of cattle rancher Robert Krentz. But it has fallen on deaf ears, and the feds have done nothing so far.
In a painful process, KGUN9 has followed the road to the White House to find out why the requests are going unanswered.
Here's where our winding road took us:
Governor Brewer has sent 5 letters to Washington requesting that the National Guard be sent out. Here are the dates from 2009:
March 11, 2009
March 24, 2009
April 22, 2009
April 24, 2009
Last Monday, March 29, Governor Brewer sent out another letter.
Five letters, zero response.
KGUN9 On your side wanted to know why Governor Brewer's letters have not gotten any response from the Obama Administration, so Steve Nunez started right at the top of the chain. He called the White House, but Media Affairs requested copies of Governor Brewer's letters. After the letters were sent to the White House, a follow up call was placed, which still didn't get any answers.
A call was then placed to Homeland Security which only went so far as voice mail.
Next call? Department of Defense. Since we got an actual live person on the phone, we presented our questions right away, and were told that a different spokesperson handled National Guard, and that person wasn't in.
Steve Nunez sent that spokesperson an email.
Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security responded to the email, saying that the Department of Defense, NOT Homeland Security, makes the call for deployment.
So, here's the trail......6 phone calls, 4 emails, no answers. Just a couple of statements including one by Napolitano's office that was released March 26th which states "the Secretary shares the Governor's concern about the safety of U.S. border communities.
There's also a statement from Obama's office saying that both parties "have produced a promising, bipartisan framework which addresses the need to shore up our borders."
Ultimately, it is President Obama who has the final say on deploying the National Guard.
