  • Airborn "Research"? I suspect the better translation in English would be "Reconnaissance."

French Commandos have proven themselves pretty effective several times over in recent years. My respects to them.

No my friend. The translation is right: airborne research.
The regiment's origins date back to WWII. The regiment back then was called the 3rd SAS French Squadron (French troops from the French Free Forces of De Gaulle). Which is why it still carries on the SAS "spirit" and motto you can read on the RAPAS badges: "Qui ose gagne" which means "Who dares wins", SAS' motto.

The tasks of the 1st RPIMa are numerous. Recon is just one of them. It may include "SAS patrols", VIP protection, combat divers, recon, support, anti-terrorism, hostage rescue etc...
Trained in every possible environment to be operational anytime, anywhere within a very short time.
The tasks carried on are defined by which RAPAS unit you are in (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th RAPAS).

Probably the best special forces regiment France has in that field.
