I remember being under the icepack for months. We always had to mark where we could surface incase of fire or toxic gas.
In Sonar, we were always checking the ice thickness as we went along.
Ice keels are another hazard. The forward looking HF sonar would map out what was in front of us. It's like walking in a dark room with a low battery falshlight with nails coming out of the ceiling.

@DCX It turns into ice that wraps around the submarine and spreads away from it as far as the horizon...then a bunch of scientist guys in orange clothes have to launch a massive operation with helicopters and all sorts of shit to free the sub..that's why you're not allowed beans or peanuts on submarines.......I may have made some of this up...
