Woman who rescued animals killed in dog attack.

A Georgia college student who cared for abandoned animals for nearly a decade was attacked and killed by a dog, police said.
Rebecca Carey, 23, was killed at her Decatur home sometime over the weekend, MyFoxAtlanta.com reports.
Authorities said Carey, who worked with dogs since she was a young
teenager, had five dogs living with her at the time of her death. They
included a pit bull, which she had owned for six years, a boxer mix and a
Presa, a large Spanish breed. She was also dogsitting another Presa for
a friend.
Carey’s body was discovered Sunday afternoon after she failed to show
up for work at Alpharetta’s Loving Hands Animal Clinic. The dogs that
she was caring for in her home were euthanized on Wednesday. It was
unclear which dog killed Carey.
"Since the second grade when she read the book 'Throw Away Pets,' she
vowed to be a voice for all animals," her parents, Greg and Ellen
Carey, said in a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Upon
placing her first abandoned animal in a permanent loving home in 2003,
she volunteered countless hours with rescue networks and animal
shelters. There she did what she loved the most: rescuing animals from
untenable situations to find them safe, loving homes."
Sgt. Kim Medlin of DeKalb County Animal County said Carey’s death was the county’s first fatal dog bite.
“I don’t know these dogs, but I know what they did,” Medlin told MyFoxAtlanta.com. “And that’s how we made our judgment.”
The cause of death was listed as neck and upper torso injuries consistent with dog bites, the website reports.
Neighbor Monica Cofer said the dogs had never shows any signs of aggression in the past.
“They never showed any type of aggression,” she told the website.
“Even if one got loose, you could tell them to go back to their yard and
they’d go back.”

  • This is more about dog dynamics and pack behaviour, than aggressive breeds. They were all large, strong breeds of dogs, and one was not hers, she might not have been seen as leader of the pack, and was challenged, fatally so.

    • @jenva Bullshit. That pack mentality stuff is just crap. Having 2 dogs myself and having worked with dogs for several years, this is all junk. Dogs know we're not dogs, and thus don't treat us like dogs. For a dog to actually kill a human, something was not right with this dog. Even if it was a territorial or dominant display, any "aggression" should not be played out to kill. Whatever dog did it was screwy. Too bad the humans were too lazy to accurately figure out which one and just k More..

    • @Cheesay So you know which dog did this? From what I am reading, its appears that all the dogs might have joined in...might. Hence my comment on pack mentality. Oh and I too have had dogs as pets for many years, but I have never claimed to be an expert, it's just my observation on dog behaviour when there is not a consistent strong leader, as owner.

    • @jenva

You don't need to be "strong" to have a dog. Giving a dog what it needs and being clear in what you want from it in return is all. No firm hand needed. When a fight breaks out between dogs, yes others may jump in. But an attack on a human is not the same. Dogs know we're not dogs. They know we're not prey. Something very wrong happened that is definitely not normal dog behavior. To actually kill a human suggests some messed up wiring with at least one of the dogs. I can't poss More..

  • Good grief, these people are idiots. Couldn't possibly do any temperament testing to figure out which dog wasn't right in the head, so they said screw it and just killed them all. I'm sure that's exactly what the lady would have wanted to justify her death. *rolls eyes*

  • A dog isn't considered safe until you lived with i for about 6 months. Many people are so naive, also they don't understand dog language. Cuddling, kissing and eye contact could be viewed by the dog as signs of aggression - remember that.

    • @ingeborgsjon Darla Napora, Michael Cook and Joseph Hines all owned their pit bulls for over 5 years...until they were all killed just last summer. No prior agression per freinds family and neighbors....and they were jst 3 of 8 pit owners killed last year...in the past 2 days, 2 people wre killed by their own pit bulls...this was one, the other was Charles Hagerman of Chicago. His wife came home to find the family pit bull still on top of him ripping his throat out.

    • @cougar58 I can't say anything about these cases since I don't know the details. However if you relationship with your dog isn't good the dog could attack you. Also what a dog experienced when it was young could trigger an attack many years later. However I believe that most dog attacks are due to humans don't understanding dog language. However dog attacks are very rare compared to other attacks/accidents, remember that!

8 people killed by pitbulls in a year isn't that many, in 2009 15,241 peo More..

    • @cougar58 It's not that simple, I just mean that pit bulls are a no-issue, you should focus on making human males less violent instead.

  • >>Hear this before? “They never showed any type of aggression,” << Didn't vote, but I call bullshit. Every dog I've ever owned that showed aggression towards humans were put down. 20+ years and zero attacks on humans with 30+ pitbulls I've owned is not luck.

  • I dont know but its pretty sad. I'll just take a guess and maybe say the dog she was watching got into a fight with another dog and she tried to separate them and the dog bit her on the neck.
