Men especially, who do hard work - like those pushups - can gain muscle quickly, but muscles add weight. The whole key to it is calories in, calories out. Since you're in a weight-loss competition, I would do exercise that does not add muscle weight - like a 5 mile walk every day - and consume fewer calories than you use. Your body will convert fat to energy, and you'll lose weight. I'm not going to get into the gory details of my own, but just trust me.

@marinemom while true muscle adds weight, your average male at best can't add more than 10-12 lbs of muscle a year, and that would be with a fairly rigorous weight training regimen. there are super humans that will add more, but usually they are using steroids to see more growth than that.
in short, the new muscle you add has to eat and so it will help eat the fat too.
this is one reason a lot of the men on the weight loss tv shows lose more weight more quickly, because men grow muscle more qui More..
