LAKE HEFNER, OK -- People at Lake Hefner, Oklahoma would think, just by looking at him, that Mike Crowley's calling might have been luring in the occasional large mouth bass until he opens his own mouth to sing.
"I watch the expression of people's faces. They say the old man can't sing. He's an old fogy. I open my mouth and they say, 'who's that'," said Crowley
At age 82, Michael Crowley can still call up the powerful voice that once brought him fame at La Scala, in Italy and an appreciative audience with the Queen of England.
Crowley said, ďAfter the performance she came up and took my hand, and said, 'Mr. Crowley, that's the most magnificent version of Valentine Iíve ever heard.'"
After going to music school his powerful voice sent him around the world to Europe, at the Metropolitan Opera.
Through the 50's and 60's his calling was the operatic stage, but when he retired he turned to his love for fishing.
And when the fish donít bite, Crowley can still draw a crowd by singing pieces of opera in Italian, offering the most unexpected package.
