  • That number doesn't even equate to how much more interesting and informative this program is to most of the crap on TV.

  • 50% of the brain power of the UK actually exists in Stephen Fry :-)

  • Maths is all a conspiracy by the socialist commie tree huggers. The world is only 6000 years old, there is no global warming, and the world ends 21 December.

Now I'ma goin to git me guns and shoot me a varmit for supper.

  • WRONG.

There are actually 80,658,175,170,943,878,571,660,636,856,403,766,975,289,505,440,883,277,824,000,000,000,000 ways to arrange 52 distinct cards.

The problem is cards are never shuffled in a truly random order. Think about that.

It is possible to "simulate" randomness by shuffling at least 7 times or more, which is why lots of casinos have a 7 shuffle rule. BTW, now you know where lucky "7" came from. By "simulate" that means 7 good shuffles tend to dist More..

    • @absu69 Yes, if it gets in the way of the truth. This is the Internet, dude, once something is said as fact and its wrong, it becomes the truth, virally, and quickly.

For the record, if anyone wishes to challenge me on what I said earlier, go ahead, I will admit when I am wrong, if I am indeed wrong. Good luck, on this one.

    • @Panthera So whats exactly is "wrong"? You haven't said. The statement that the order his cards are in is unique? What explains the difference between his number on the screen and yours?

    • @Panthera

Very good point, but way to take my "world first" with my pack of cards away from me. Dick.

  • So your saying theres a chance?

    Posted Nov-8-2012 By

  • For non-math people, the number is called 52 factorial, written 52! There are 52 cards in the deck. You are multiplying all numbers from 1 to 52 with each other.

    52!=1*2*3*...*49*50*51*52.

Probability theory is the most interesting part of mathematics, I hate the rest.

By the way, in google, you can type 52! and it will show you the answer.

By the way, to math people: he is WRONG. The probability of someone having their cards in the same order is actually much bigger. It's like lottery, th More..

    • @GXst non math? I think even simple factorials are compulsory in every school but I may be wrong

      Posted Nov-8-2012 By

    • @Adrianexi maybe, I don't know. I didn't have probability in school at all!

I think though I was wrong with the last part where I told that he was wrong. That exact same combination of cards is this probability that he states.

After Hours of working the numbers,, I always come out with the same end number....

    • @GXst Are you trying to say you are right and Stephen Fry is wrong?

      Posted Nov-8-2012 By

      (0)

    • @paulc07 No, look at my reply. I already said I was wrong.

The probability that this particular combination has already been repeated is the number he has shown, but the probability of any combination repeating itself is actually much higher.

So, there is a high chance that combinations have repeated itself.

    • @JetRanger I'm sure it airs at other countries, here in Israel it was on channel 8 for a while a few years back. I Hope they bring it back, Even though I already watched all the episodes online.

Very funny and smart, especially the ones with David Mitchell (He's the most awesome person alive).

  • he overlooked one thing.
There IS a possibility that that particular order has been done before. There are a trillion billion ways to stack those cards but before you can order them all some have already have been in that order before.
Am I not making sense? ok I'll stop

    • @lwkleijn There IS a possibility, but the chance is so tiny that it is effectively zero. And, no, your grammar does not make sense.

      Posted Nov-8-2012 By

    • @lwkleijn

There is also a chance that I can win the powerball lottery 35 times in a row..

Thats about the same chance as that number he flashed on that screen I think :)

  • Although, just beacause it's mathematically extremely unlikely to occur (1 in 52!, to be precise), doesn't mean that it can't actually happen twice in a row. Just makes it very, very unlikely!
