  • This was on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. When they interviewed this guy he HAD to be clinically insane, he stated he will do this until he dies and if he couldn't do this in life he'd have no purpose in life. Guy is on natural crack.

They showed a video of one of his buddies who flew with him over a bridge, launched out of a plane. His friend hit the side of the bridge at full speed, was killed instantly but still fell straight down. Now THAT was actually disturbing.

    • @Loomfries His friend was Dwain Weston. He hit the bridge railing and was cut in half & kept on going.

Here is a video of various BASE jumping fatalities including Dwain's last jump at 0:50 onwards, two camera angles without censorship:

They show this stuff to new BASE jumpers so they know what they're getting into. Technically Dwain was on a skydive not a BASE jump.

  • despite the lack of blood and missing limbs, this is one of the most disturbing videos i've ever seen. how he managed to get control of his flight and land is mind blowing, i thought he was a dead man for sure! i hope he keeps doing what he loves good luck healing

  • Incredibly lucky to make it with only 2 broken legs! It seems that there wasnt even enough time for the main chute to open before he crash landed!

    • @mikedelta12 It opened but with line twists. It's a BASE jumping rig so it is designed to open fast with features like no slider to stage the opening sequence.

Normally there is no reserve although some rigs like the sorcerer have a main assisted reserve deployment.

    • @dorbie Thats great info! I jumped a few times in the 90s in college, but that was with a static line. I never knew that BASE rigs were different. Did it get twisted because of the lack of a slider? or is that only to slow the opening?

    • @mikedelta12 It got twisted due to asymmetric unstable body position during deployment. And we saw why he was not on his game during the deployment.

    • @mikedelta12 Base jumping rigs have evolved due to people killing themselves with normal parachutes. If you get even a slight hesitation in BASE it can kill you, and symmetric opening is paramount to avoid cliff strikes. Reserves are typically considered a waste of time because your'e too low (opinions vary). Also there's no FAA certification requirement either and no legal requirement to have a reserve.

      So the designs have diverged.

    • @dorbie So... You should pack your own chute?
