Gen. James Mattis, known to his troops as “Mad Dog Mattis,” is retiring after 41 years of military service.

The Marine Corps Times is calling Mattis the most revered Marine in a generation.

Mattis has been commander of the United States Central Command since 2010 and led the 1st Marine Division into Iraq in 2003.

According to reports, President Barack Obama decided to force the Marine Corps legend out early because he rubbed civilian officials the wrong way, and forced them to answer tough questions regarding Iran.

Mattis was an inspirational leader of men and his powerful words will go down in history.

Here are some of the best words that the “Mad Dog” has had to offer:

Be no better friend, no worse enemy.

It's fun to shoot some people.

The most important six inches on the battlefield is between your ears.

Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.

The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event.

Fight with a happy heart.

Find the enemy that wants to end this experiment (in American democracy) and kill every one of them until they’re so sick of the killing that they leave us and our freedoms intact.

If in order to kill the enemy you have to kill an innocent, don’t take the shot. Don’t create more enemies than you take out by some immoral act.

It’s very hard to live with yourself if you don’t stick with your moral code.

Tragedy is when one of your beloved young sailors or Marines, who will literally die to carry out your orders, does something and now you have to court martial him.

If you have high expectations, if you can win the affection of your young sailors or Marines, they will win all the battles for you.

You cannot allow any of your people to avoid the brutal facts. If they start living in a dream world, it’s going to be bad.

Have a good toot with your buddies (with apologies for glamorizing alcohol.)

Just get on with it, put in the miles and the weight-training and the study.

Some platoons are worth as much as a company, because of the social energy of their leaders.

There is nothing better than getting shot at and missed. It’s really great.

If you have the guts to step across that line, then just go out and enjoy the brawl. Just have a damn good time. Train your men well. Go beat the crap out of people who deserve it, and when they throw down their gun, then you have won. Don’t apologize to anybody for it, because your moral standards are so high.

I don’t lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word.

You don’t have to make this whole world a heavy burden that you are carrying on your shoulders.

I don’t believe in demonizing the enemy. I don’t patronize them either.

We’ve backed off in good faith to try and give you a chance to straighten this problem out. But I am going to beg with you for a minute. I'm going to plead with you, do not cross us. Because if you do, the survivors will write about what we do here for 10,000 years.

There are some people who think you have to hate them in order to shoot them. I don’t think you do. It’s just business.

I spent 30 years getting ready for that decision that took 30 seconds.

I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f* with me, I’ll kill you all.
