Poll: Majority Unsure Who Speaks For The GOP

WASHINGTON (CNN) – As the Republican Party struggles to regain its footing following the November elections, a new survey shows that a majority of adult Americans sees no clear leader for the minority political party.

Even more problematic for the GOP is that one-third of Republicans hold an unfavorable view of their party, according to the USA Today/Gallup poll.

When it comes to naming a “main person” who speaks for the GOP, 52 percent of Americans were unable to do so.

Among those who did name a speaker for the GOP, 13 percent identified conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh, while 10 percent named former Vice President Dick Cheney. Arizona Sen. John McCain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich were each named by 6 percent of Americans in the poll.

Just 3 percent said former President George W. Bush is currently the most prominent Republican speaker, while Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and House Minority Leader John Boehner were each named by 1 percent of participants in the survey.

“These numbers are troubling for Republicans, who are engaged in a civil war right over the ideological direction of the party,” said CNN Political Editor Mark Preston. “When one-third of Republicans hold an unfavorable view of the party, it makes it difficult to establish a united front to promote GOP policies at the same time opposing President Obama’s agenda.”

A third of Republicans in the poll said the GOP should not moderate its policies in its quest to regain power.

The poll surveyed 1,015 adults on May 29-31 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

  • We don't need a teleprompter or a MESSIAH; conservatives are independent and rely on themselves. Peasants and sheep need leadership (and a nanny state) because they are too stupid to make decisions on their own.

  • Why does it matter? Why do these networks pay so much attention to the people with the least power in government right now?

Do we REALLY need to ask?

Don't forget John Murtha, who still refuses to apologize for saying, "they killed innocent civilians in cold blood" about the Marines at Haditha even after they were found not guilty.

  • Rush limbaugh does! and Hannity is right behind him as the vice prez. The problem is these guys will not go away and they cannot be denounced by the GOP. Politics is a series of process that only a leader can guide, these two smart alecs are not leaders, but those outside the GOP and potential GOPers see em as the GOP. They talk the talk but do not walk the walk, in short their is nobody to look up to, right wing media did not cause the revolution hoped for by simpleton thinking, trying to convince listeners that obama has failed because we did not wake up to a fixed economy. In fact it has shown that the GOP cannot put forth solutions the main focus has been to blame, critisize etc.... Reagan was a leader he kept the core values of the GOP at center and lead, leaders do not belly ache, and cry or are smart alecs which is the new core beliefs of the repubs.....

yes, your party is so independent it bows to Catholicism and Christianity and can't sever its ties with oil corporations, for some reason

so independent that if any high ranking Republican's point of view breaks away from the rest the person's career gets shuttled. ask Tom Delay what he did to Republicans who dissented against the Party's Talking Points -- look it up yourself

    real independent, Markus

i know who would represent the GOP perfectly right now given their consistently pro-war, pro-religious stance

Jeb Bush, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter

put them in power and watch them put around half of America in a concentration camp for "treason" (i.e., for being perceived as "liberal")

let's make the situation so godawful here that there's a revolution. go ahead and start it off, Repubs, you did a great job turning a surplus into a record size deficit in 8 years already

There's a clear difference between conservatives and republicans, Las. You're trying to say a political party is the same as an ideology which is incorrect. I'm an atheist fyi.

I personally love oil companies. They have an amazing business models, conduct operations on enormous scales, are able to produce a highly profitable product, and hedge financial risks as if it were an art. From a business standpoint, most are great companies and the biggest taxpayers in the US. Libs like you hate them because they're so successful and make lots of money (which is what businesses do). I don't understand the lib mindset.
