U.S. Troops in Darwin

AMERICAN marines landed in Darwin last night, about 200 in a rifle company that will grow to some 2500 US troops.

The decision to base the marines for six months of the year in the Northern Territory was struck last year.

China and Indonesia reacted with concern but Australia and the US have offered reassurance that the move should not be seen as an arms build-up.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in a statement last night that the training exercises marked an ''evolution'' of existing military ties.

But she said this did not amount to a ''base''. ''There are no US military bases in Australia, and this will not change,'' she said.

The marines will train with Australian forces but will also use the training ground independently.

  • Do Australians really care or are they worried? I assume the trust level is pretty high but I've never gotten to know any Australians. Kanooks used their F18's as a supplement for for what ever constitutes hot standby and patrols when the USAF grounded F22's. ( I think that was the story? also don't know the right USAF terms) I think I can trust the kanooks plenty good and wouldn't flinch too much to see a maple leaf on the tail of something pointy was launching loud and heavy. I assume it More..

    • @Monty

Why are we defending a rich nation? These overseas bases are taxing and wasteful. Bring the troops home and concentrate on proper VA care, technological advancement, and training in the US.

    • @bizzle It's an Australian base that has a section inside it that's operated by the NSA, the Australians have a section in there as well that neither country allows the opposite into.

It's basically a secret US base inside a secret Australian base.

    • @nowhereman1 Hopefully we won't need their help. The national ship procurement strategy should help with our plans for the north.

  • The marines saved Australia's ass in 1942. I trained and had Liberty there in the 80's. At least our two countries can cooperate as allies still.

    • @grunt At what battle did the USMC save Australia?

The only time US forces saved Australia was at the Battle of the Coral Sea. Other than that the only fighting done by the US was to attack Japanese bases at Guadal Canal. Those bases weren't being used for operations against Australia. The real fight to save Australia happened after the Battle of the Coral Sea forced the Imperial Japanese Army to abandon its plans to invade Port Moresby by sea and to trek over the Owen Stanley Ranges via foot.
