We have them here where I live on Chickamauga Lake, and see then now and again. But I sure dont want to handle them. They look like prehistoric monsters and are amazing to watch.

I've seen one the size of a garbage can lid in northern ohio but it was a snapping turtle, not an alligator snapping turtle.
It would still bite your nuts off

@doood I live right on the water and have a dock out front of the house. We see them quite often, but not this big. Maybe every other year. The last ones I saw were this size and were mating. The males are very mean to the females and seems they are trying to drown them, but thats nature. They are mean look damned things when their paws/claws are bigger than your hands and necks bigger around than your forearms! THen we have the Alligator Gars too! Mean damned things!

@Airedale I lived in SE ohio for a while after retiring. USed to fish the Mad River up in Logan County, Bellfountaine area. Guys were in the rivers and streams reaching in holes and grabbing them. Crazy fuckers!
Not for me. I'll stick to fly fishing.

We were training on the Perdido River when we rolled up to the docks and a couple old rednecks had two of them on the bank.They were about this size or bigger and mean as a wet rat and twice as pissed.
