SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-- Authorities in Springfield say a police officer responding to a domestic call has been fatally shot by a New York man who critically wounded a woman before taking his own life.
Police Commissioner William Fitchet said Officer Kevin Ambrose went to the woman's apartment around 1 p.m. Monday after she told police she feared for her life. Fitchet said Ambrose found 29-year-old Charlene Mitchell and 35-year-old Shawn Bryan, a New York City corrections officer from Hempstead, N.Y., outside and they went to Mitchell's apartment. Fitchet said Bryan pushed Mitchell inside, followed her and slammed the door. Fitchet said Bryan shot Ambrose through the door, opened it and fired again, then shot Mitchell.
Fitchet said Bryan shot himself outside in his car.
Ambrose, a 36-year veteran, is the first Springfield officer killed on duty in nearly 27 years.
