Amid escalating Tel Aviv threats against Tehran, an analyst says the era when Israel could threaten other countries with war is over and Iran and Mideast states are capable of countering any Israeli ‘stupidity.’
This comes as Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari promised the end of the Zionist regime if it attacks Iran.
The commander said Israel’s hostile policies would eventually lead it toward waging a war against Iran but as the Islamic Republic is fully capable of repelling “any insane moves” by the Zionists.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Kamel Wazne, political analyst from Beirut, to further discuss the issue.
The program also offers the opinions of two other guests: Gareth Porter, historian and investigative journalist from Washington; and Mark Dankof, political commentator and broadcaster from San Antonio. The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: What about the possibility of false flags? There are many that say this recent attack on Islam’s Prophet with that movie, that actually it initiated in Israel, sort of like another false flag attack, trying to get people to react a certain way.
Now, our guest in San Antonio has talked about a greater version of a false flag attack with the [terrorist Mojahedin-e Khalq] MEK. What’s the possibility of that, and Israel initiating some type of false flag attack in order to bring the United States on board?
Wazne: At this point, I think the Americans have a [many] problems at home and abroad. I think the United States tried to distance itself from the Israeli position. So far, the Americans, they provided Israel with a lot of support, with a lot of weapons.
But my estimate and the reports that we have been reading, they haven’t supported them with aircraft necessary to launch an attack or the ammunition that will be used in any attack.
I think the statement that’s coming from the Americans, especially from the Chief of Staff General Dempsey, he was very clear when he indicated to the Israelis that you cannot launch an attack by yourself.
So any attack against Iran has to have the approval and the blessing of the United States otherwise it will not happen.
If such an attack ever happens, it’s going to be the United States who is going to be behind it, and it’s the United States who going to be responsible for it.
And I think that at this point, at this juncture of history, I think the United States is trying to downsize its position in the Middle East. They withdrew from Iraq. They’re looking to withdraw from Afghanistan by 2014.
I think they’re heading with their aim and military to Asia to face probably the great Chinese power, and I think they’ll start preparing for a cold war with the Russians.
Press TV: You say you don’t think that the United States really wants to expand or get into another war in the Middle East. Do you think it is pressure from Washington right now that is preventing Tel Aviv from launching an attack?
Wazne: I think it’s the pressure, and that Israel doesn’t have the means or the strength to launch a war against Iran. You have to look at it from both sides. Israel doesn’t launch a war because it doesn’t have the means, and the other side is very strong and capable and determined.
We don’t have to undermine the capability of the Iranians and their strong will to defend their country, and the technology that they acquired in the past 30 years. Iranians are a formidable force able to defend themselves and to launch a counter-attack on Israel.
The Israelis know very [well] that any stupidity by the Israelis will be countered by the Iranian might and whoever supports Iran across the world, any war against Iran is going to be a holy war against Israel, and it’s going to be the end of Israel.
I think the United States knows this very well and the Israelis [are playing] stupid in this game and they know they cannot dare to attack Iran, not because they don’t want to but because they know what the price will be if they attack Iran, unilaterally.
They think and they hope that they will get the United States to engage in an attack, but I think the United States, at this point, is worn down by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, their military capability has turned this war out.
Look at the casualties that they had. Look at the injuries that they had out of Iraq and Afghanistan. I think the number is staggering. You’re looking at the US, talking about maybe between 300,000 and 600,000 they have these kinds of injuries that has to do with personal disorders because of these wars.
I think the United States military is not capable today of launching a war or being in a war; and on the other hand, not to mention the economic cost of any war.
The United States now will pay a dear price and the world economy will pay a dear price if such an attack will happen. The oil price will jump over 250 dollars at the start of any speculation of a war, and this will bring a depression to the United States and bring depression to the rest of the world because this would be the biggest tax on the US economy.
I think the important thing is that any attack will not succeed in its mission because the Iranians, the technologies that they have is not allocation. It’s a knowledge that they acquired. This is not going away.
Any attack will not yield the result that the Israelis or the Americans want.
Iran has the right to have nuclear [technology] for peaceful [purposes] and I think this is not going to change if that attack happens or does not happen.
Press TV: As Gareth Porter has just said, he thinks this has been a bluff all along. Do you think that Tel Aviv is bluffing?
Wazne: I think the days when the Israelis can threaten is over. The Israelis, they’re not in a position to threaten anybody in the Middle East, not [in a position to] threaten Lebanon and not [in a position to] threaten the Iranians. Those days are over.
They’re not fighting [in] the old days when they fought Egypt and they fought Syria. These days are gone.
Today, the mighty power of new [governments] that are capable and able to defend [themselves] and to counter-attack is [visible]. The Israelis have to move on. Their threats are hollow. It doesn’t mean very much.
I think on the other hand, you have to be ready if such stupidity comes out. And if such stupidity comes out, I think the response is going to be horrific against Israel. If they make that mistake, they’re going to regret it.
