Eurozone unemployment at fresh high

1 October 2012 Last updated at 10:43

The unemployment rate in Spain is the highest in the eurozone

Unemployment in the eurozone hit a fresh high of 18.2 million in August, the EU statistics agency has said.

The number of people out of work rose by 34,000, but revised data for July meant the unemployment rate remained stable at a record high of 11.4%.

The highest unemployment rate was recorded in Spain, where 25.1% of the workforce is out of a job, and the lowest of 4.5% was recorded in Austria.

The unemployment rate in Germany was 5.5%, Eurostat said.

Youth unemployment remains a particular concern, with the rate among under-25s hitting 22.8% across the eurozone, and 52.9% in Spain.

In Greece, the most recent figures recorded in June also show that more than 50% of the young workforce has no job.

These two countries have by far the highest unemployment rate in the eurozone, as both governments look to cut spending and raise taxes to try and cut high debt levels.

These actions, which are needed in Greece to meet the terms of two huge bailouts and in Spain to restore confidence among international investors in Madrid's ability to repay its debts, have exacerbated the unemployment problem.

Across the wider 27-nation European Union, unemployment rose by 49,000 to 25.5 million people, Eurostat said, with the unemployment rate stable at 10.5%.

Compared with a year earlier, the unemployment rate rose in 20 countries, fell in six and remained stable in the UK.

  • And I'm one of them... There's no work, I'm lucky that I'm 23 and I still living at home, and I'll keep studying at least 2 years more, so then if there's no jobs for me I'll have to move away. Nowadays I've finished studying a 2 year module (I don't know how to explain that in english) and I've worked 3 months on a local TV as practices, as a camera operator, when the contract ended they said me there's no job for another one, and I know that's true, the other local TV on the area was forced to More..

I'm not talking about your local First National Bank Branch,I probably should have made it more clearer,.I'm talking about the BIG GUYS,the Bankers Bank,,which is actually mores string filled then you can fathom,..
They control how much growth is opportunistically loaned out,.they control if a guy can invest into a business, because they choke the little Banks,..on and on,.and that's just one micro division of a huge problem in lots of areas,.

    • @UKGEZR I am not a banker, but what do you mean by "a good thing". It is a big scam to control loans over countries with the Euro.

  • It's really shitty here too to be honest, and as a young unemployed chap I can tell you it's not due to lack of effort. I graduated a few months back and I've been looking for work since early August now and having no luck. I'm getting around 1 decent interview per week despite the fact it feels like I'm applying for a million jobs per day. I'm having to work on a bar at the moment just to make ends meet and afford to actually travel to interviews :/

    • @Death3159 I'm still trying to figure out why Germany got involved in the EU. That's like adopting a bunch of retarded children - not there's anything wrong with that. :^]

    • @Death3159 It is a political enslavement plan. Nothing is done for good reasons. EU was NOT created so countries could live peacefully together. That's hippie bullshit. The whole thing is one big scam with Germany lending money and collecting interest off it. It's the easiest money in the world. Back before the single currency, countries could control inflation (by priting money or raising interest rates etc) and thereby decrease their loans, because they had own currencies. Now, with Euro, coun More..
