  • I'm not a hater of England, but it *was* the English who built the first concentration camps in South Africa killing thousands of Dutch women and children with their horrendous conditions. The camera shots in this video showing the journalist standing off with his moralizing look on his face were disgusting. People find it hard to understand that, but it's just that people don't know their own smell.

      That's just an urban legend, there are examples of concentration camps that precede the Boer Wars, so the British weren't the first to use them. What is true is that they were the first to call them like that, but that's about all in matters of innovation...

    • Actually, after reviewing what I wrote I realised that this is not even true. The expression concentration camp is actually derived from the Spanish campo de reconcentración, as these were known in Cuba during the Ten Years' War (1868-1878), years before the Boer Wars, when the name came to be known in English.

      So no, not only the British didn't invent the concentration camps, but contrary to what I initially said they didn't even invent the name.

    • @Valerie2007 It might have to do with scale. In the Boer Wars the camps were very big. WWIIish. That's probably what is meant. Goering famously rebuked a British diplomat on the subject.

      Ah, yes, if we talk about the details we may find some that were common between the Nazi and the Boer War camps and which were first seen in the latter, but that's a bit of a long shot for saying that it was a British invention. If we go for the scale, I think that 27,000 people got killed in the Boer War camps in total, a number which would be good to compare with the Nazi death camps. That's perhaps because, as far as I know, no gas chambers or active means to kill the prisoners we More..
