Black Mesa Source, possibly the greatest and most anticipated mod of all time, has been released today after eight years of community development, to accolades. Initial feedback is extremely positive and the levels of detail are amazing, especially considering the game is entirely free to play, based off an older engine, it still outdoes many modern release, paid titles.
For gamers who remember the impact that half life 1 made to the gaming community in 1999, now it has been completely remade by the fan community with some support from the original makers and ported to the source engine.

Is this the next direction games can take? Fully open source?
Recorded this at 1440p maxed other than 4XMSAA so if you can take advantage of that resolution, run it above 1080 at 'original' resolution. I've been waiting eight years for it, so I'll see you all tomorrow when I come out of my gaming cocoon ;P

Entire remake, new textures, polygons, voice acting and everything, same storyline for the diehards. Xen (last 2 alien levels) not completed yet as they are completely different and have a short play time. Lots of work. Free to play, enjoy!

Waited 8 years for it but thought valve was just stewing on it again (where is HL2 episode 3 or HL3...), until last month or so! Didn't know it was full community based or else I would have lent a hand somehow.

I would love to see more of this happening.
Computers and the internet have so much potential for shrinking the world, the markets and building communities.

I'm amazed it has lasted this long to be honest, problem is it would cause mass uproar because people couldn't get their latest sitcoms and facebook updates.. so it probably will never happen. It's the one thorn in the side of the establishment, gosh, anyone can wage information war as equal as another on this playing field.
More open source would be great, or pooled donation developments, pay what you think the game is worth etc.. that sort of stuff could potentially work very well More..

Gameplay was a lot like GTA or Saints row the third.
3rd person shooter/fighter.
Decent storyline,some nice perks, great graphics.
It was entertaining but a bit short if you just follow the main missions.

I hear ya, but don't find BF3 as spectacular as nearly 2 year old crysis2 DX11 ultra, which is designed for PC and not port based like bf3. That said bf3 delivers a damn immersive experience.
For me that oldschoolness still appeals, leaves more to the imagination :)
