'Tortured, terrorised and abused': Disabled Tenager tied down and given shocks

DISTURBING footage of a disabled teenager being tied down and given more than 30 electric shocks allegedly as part of school discipline has emerged from the US.

Andre McCollins was an 18-year-old student at the Judge Rotenberg Centre in Massachusetts - a school for severely disabled children - when staff allegedly first administered the shocks in October 2002.

The punishment came after a fight with another pupil and continued when he refused to take his jacket off.

The CCTV footage is part of a court case where Mr McCollins’s mother Cheryl is suing the school and three employees.

In tearful testimony, she told a US court she had not expected her son to be "tortured, terrorised and abused" while he was at the school.

    • @brokenrob I am in NO WAY condoning what they are claiming in this video. But if you have worked with them, then you know as well as I who have been involved with Special Olympics and Make a Wish Foundation for 15 years or so, that they can be very strong, and very violent in circumstances.
But as I say, Im not condoning the use of a taser or stun device.
Most of thses kids I worked with were loving kids who wanted to have a good time and have some worth for themselves. But once in a while we wo More..

    • @brokenrob I know man, I guess Im just leary of the news media and lawyers anymore. I guess I will have ti wait until it is proven to me. It does look like some sort of "time out" bed of sorts, but the shocks are out of the question.

    • @dorbie You may have took me wrong. I am no way condoning what they are claiming happened. I just want to hear both sides, and then the truth is all. But if this is what happened, it is un-excusable.

  • There are always three sides of a story.
Two sides of the story and then the truth.

      Yep. The Mom knew.

The JUDGE ROTENBERG CENTER (JRC) is a special needs school in Canton, Massachusetts serving ages 3-adult. For 39 years JRC has provided very effective education and treatment to both emotionally disturbed students with conduct, behavior, emotional, and/or psychiatric problems and developmentally delayed students with autistic-like behaviors.

    • @Arizona_Patriot I was involved with Special Olympics and Make a wish for years. I have seen many wonderful kids in these programs. But have also seen may cases of kids just losing it and being extra strong, and being completely out of control for hours on end. And you never knew what was going to trigger them. It is a bad and sad thing. But you have no idea what is going on in their mind. One of the other problems is now and I know this as fact, is many of the volunteers have quit because of t More..

    • @tat2d no doubt there is more to this story, but under no circumstances whatsoever is this kind of treatment of a disabled person appropriate or legal. And you know that.

  • The answer is obvious. Strap them to a bed and taser them 31 times each. Maybe then they'll see what that situation feels like. I know some people have to get tasered as part of the training to use the taser, for just that purpose. But that is just one burst in a safe and secure environment with every comfort and precaution they can expect to have in a tasering situation. That's not even close to a real situation. They should be broken down by the tasers, because that is how they use it later on More..

  • That can't be real. I have to think hard to name parents I might know that wouldn't execute those people for doing that. If it's real spontaneous predatory torture, that must be a regional thing.... breaking out the lawyer instead of the shotgun to the face.

  • That's a quick soundbite. What about the facts behind any parental consent or doctor's involvement? If none of that, then we have something to talk about.
