  • Well, Mr. Guarnere, maybe it has to do with the fact that your country bombed the shit out of the French months before and during the battle of Normandy, killing scores of French civilians. And still, many Frech did receive you with open arms, and still do when you go to Normandy every year to celebrate the anniversary.

    In spite of that, I respect you and salute your service and the fact that you fought to liberate the Europeans from the Nazi scum.

      Normandy remained untouched by the battles of 1940, no fighting took place in that area prior to the Normandy campaign.

      The Germans occupied the area and built the defences as part of the Atlantic Wall.

      Who could forget Mers el-Kebir, where Admiral Somerville and his fleet sank most of the the French ships stationed in that port after refusing to go to English ports.

      Why do you think the first troops to land in French-held North Africa were american soldiers which carried an armband with the american flag? Because the Vichy French were still sore of those ships sunk by the English and would have not accepted an invasion by British troops easily.
