On February 26th, 2012 in Sanford, FL., 17 year old Trayvon Martin, a young black man, was shot and killed while visiting his father’s fiancé in a gated community. The killer was 28 year old George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic block captain who claimed that he shot Martin in self defense while making a routine patrol in the area. During a 911 call to police, while following him, he described Trayvon as “wearing a hoody” and looking “suspicious”. During the call, Zimmerman ignored the instruction from a 911 dispatcher that he stop following the boy, left his truck and went to look for Martin.

Afterwards, an apparent struggle ensued between him and Martin which resulted in the death of the 17 year old. To date, police still have not charged or arrested Zimmerman. This decision has invoked national outraged from citizens and human rights organizations alike. Trayvon’s parents and supporters are demanding that the Justice Department charge Zimmerman with a federal hate crime asserting that the young man was killed as result of racial profiling.

Last week, Zimmerman dropped off the radar, many believe to evade arrest or physical harm. On Saturday March 24th, the Washington D.C. based New Black Panther Party (NBPP) announced on CNN that it, along with many people across the country, was offering a $10,000 reward for the safe capture and citizen’s arrest of George Zimmerman. NBPP National Chairman Malik Zulu Shabazz sat down with Your Black World for an exclusive interview to explain this controversial action that has raised many eyebrows. (Malik Zulu Shabazz is a Washington,D.C. based Criminal Defense Attorney. He has headed the New Black Panther Party since 2001).

YBW: What is the reason for the NBPP offering a bounty for George Zimmerman? And is it legal?

MZS: The NBPP did not put out a bounty. We put out an offer/reward and collected moneys from the churches and broader community in Florida who had been offering the same thing. And they came to us for help in raising the money to reward someone for making a legal citizen’s arrest because there’s a felon on the loose of whom we have probable cause and reasonable suspicion that he has committed a serious felony. And that is the murder of Trayvon Martin. We did it reluctantly. We want the authorities such as the Justice Department, the State of Florida, and the local police to do their job. But it’s very difficult for us to sit back and see our mothers and grandmothers in pain over a manifest injustice while a killer walks the streets and we stand idly by. This is hard to do.

YBW: Do you confirm or deny allegations that the NBPP is advocating vigilante justice?

MZS: Well our reading of the Florida Common Law and other relevant statutes tell us that a citizen has a legal right to make a citizen’s arrest, again when there’s probable cause or reasonable suspicion that a felony has been committed. And it’s clear that the police are in cahoots with the criminal here (George Zimmerman) ever since the night Trayvon was shot and killed. And so no, we’re not advocating vigilantism, but we are going to be vigilante and stay tough on this case for justice.

YBW: Mr. Zimmerman recently, as we’re sure you’re aware of, seems to have gone into hiding. It was also reported that his father is a retired Virginia judge. Do you believe that people in high places of authority are helping to hide Mr.Zimmerman?

MZS: Yes. I don’t know for certain. But I think it’s obvious that there are people in high places who are concealing him. If this is so, it’s really ridiculous and it’s a slap in the face of black people as well as the 75% of Americans who are saying that he should be arrested. We’ll see how long this plays out.

YBW: There‘s a concern by many that your organization offering a reward for Mr. Zimmerman’s capture is in fact endangering his life.

MZS: How so?

YBW: Say for example there may be a zealot or a person who is gung-ho, in the background, hearing about a $10,000 reward for Zimmerman, who may try to physically harm him or worse while apprehending him. And people say that his blood is on your hands. How would the NBPP deal with such a scenario?

MZS: Let me ask you one question. Why are we worried about Zimmerman? We should be worried about Trayvon Martin and his family. I’m not worried about Zimmerman. He has obviously hidden himself. Why are we so worried about him?

YBW: How is the reward money being raised?

MZS: Most of it is coming from the community in Florida, specifically from residents and citizens who say that police have been treating them unfairly for years. And they wanted to do something that would accelerate the arrest of Zimmerman. The money is also being raised by community activists. Its only $10,000. It should be more.

YBW: That brings us to our next question about the reward amount. We’ve seen news reports saying that it’s been raised and or will be raised to $1 Million. Is this true?


MZS: Not as of yet, but hopefully soon. There have been so many attacks on our reward that I don’t know how much it will rise. But I must reemphasize that the attacks and criticisms should not be on the NBPP. They should be against the police department. If they were doing their job we wouldn’t have to mention a reward. The focus should be on Zimmerman and the police department. We’re just black men and women who believe that justice has to be done. And where racist law enforcement agencies will not do justice then the Constitution gives us legal rights to assist in seeing that it is done. And if Zimmerman is arrested by a citizen and the police decide to free him, let them be bold enough to do it in front of the whole World.

YBW: Although Zimmerman was not a law enforcement officer many have said that he was behaving in that capacity when he shot Trayvon. Do you believe that the reward for his arrest will deter others in law enforcement from racially profiling blacks and Latinos, specifically black and Latino men?

MZS: Let me clarify that I have not personally offered any reward. This instead is a joint effort by the NBPP and the Florida community to offer a reward. And I would say that the war against police brutality is multifaceted. The effort to end it must be taken on all fronts. And so this is one of the measures that would help in the future. We have to stop law enforcement, neighborhood watch, and other racists from hunting us down like we’re criminals simply because we’re wearing hoods or really because we’re black. So we’ll see. Obviously this has opened up a new discussion and a new chapter. And whatever God is using us to do in this hour; we’ll just have to accept it. I want black people to know that the NBPP and Dr. Malik Zulu Shabazz are the friends, lovers, helpers, and servants of the black community. I caution you not to believe the negative things that they say about the Party. Please know that we’re some sincere brothers and sisters who want justice. And we’re not at all eager to compromise justice in the face of injustice.
