The Destruction of Small Business in America
 Part of channel(s): Yoursay (promoted)

This is my rant concerning small business in America. As a small business owner I have seen a rapid decline since the Obama Administration took office.

  • You Hit the Nail on the head!, You said some of the same things i have said recently. I own and operate a glass block company and i am busy and were paying our bills but once taxes come around i get cleaned out. left holding an empty bag. I cant hire more people with all the taxes and regulations. Banks are tighter than two coats of paint when it comes to loaning money. I have said for a long time that there need to be a new classification of Small Biz Called Micro biz and we should have some fl More..

    • @BIGLOUBRUNO Whats your plan? It is time to organize as small business owners. I am thinking about extending credit to customers so they can afford larger projects and just pay over time. Some income is better than none.

  • My business has grown leaps and bounds the last 4 years. Although that is coincidence. I would love to chalk it up to Obama strictly for the "we built that" lie you follow. I would also like to blame it on Bush. But I can't.

The economy went south and effected us about 5 years ago. That is just how it is and blaming anyone for it is the first step to going out of business. I made the decision to never let an elected official dictate my life or business. Sure they can effect it but bl More..

    • @corgnar123 I definitely agree with you. I and my business partner work normal jobs to fund our business. I have no life but I am happy doing what I am doing. I was just pointing out that the opportunities for small business have dwindled.

    • @Ms_X Oh indeed they have. And I like your passion! I think the bank side of things has gone to shit, no doubt. I think what bugs me is seeing some small biz owners I deal with on a regular basis just sitting around blaming the government. I used to do it my self but then took charge and started to innovate and do things the others were not. To Obamas defense, I did get a ton of deductions that helped us. I have also learned that dealing with that stuff on a local level in your community and wit More..

    • @corgnar123 Great points I definitely am starting to think about organizing small business owners. I think it would be great to issue lines of credit to our clients and one another. Or maybe even something similar to an Ithaca hour.

  • The worst part is there is no light at the end of this economic dark hole any time soon.

I never though I'd see the day when it was harder to start a small business than when my dad started his back in the mid 60's.

Btw there are several independent business owners right here on LiveLeak's YS section that can probably attest to the same issues you are facing.

Voted--so glad to see you back!

    • @piruly just in the short time we have been operating the environment has changed and our money devalued. I have been thinking about advertising on here.

  • These loan denials are a primary reason the recovery isn't working. Those bank loans are restricted by federal regulatory rules that were tightened to minimize risk-taking. They have gone too far in the opposite direction, which has shut down the ability of the economy to self-heal. Your case is a perfect example.

    • @joe prole Yes the banks are lent money at 0% to one another but they are using the money to prop up themselves and offset their losses. They are also propping themselves up by ceasing customer money. Banking is really rotten.

    • @joe prole
I am glad you said that.
A friend of mine had a real tough time getting a loan for his house. It was people (with the help of the banks) biting more than they could chew. But it is Obama's fault today.

    • @joe prole The feds are also paying interest to the banks based on how much money they have in their vaults. So why would they bother loaning it out?

    • @Americanalltheway definitely know bailouts here. If I could just keep the money I make and not have to worry about the IRS biting me at year end I would not need a loan.

    • @Ms_X --i had a business that i was building from the ground up--nothing tremendous --just following a dream--and in 2007 everything went south--may i suggest that it is the lawyers who are responsible--they are the ones who write these copious pieces of legislation---small businesses don't have the resources to hire lawyers to navigate these regulations---the big businesses that do--like this arrangement because it keeps competition suppressed--and the lawyers like it because it keeps their cam More..

    • @ARNOLD-R-LANE Too true. Lawyers are protecting the powers that be to ensure monopolization and centralization. I was just asked yesterday if I had a lawyer to deal with a client not paying me a timely fashion. I definitely do not have a lawyer so I will just have to play bill collector:) I hope someday you can continue to pursue your dream.

  • If you are trying to feed at the trough of government waste then yeah, its definitely tougher. But even with the Hub Zone set aside components honored by the former administration the big companies were just gaming that too. They'd slice themselves up into tiny "new companies" when all they really were, were just a piece of the big jelly fish in the first place. You know, OH here comes the government contract, Quick, look small!

"Big box" isn't the problem - that's just an excuse.

My business renovates and leases houses. We buy lots of building materials. I have accounts at "Big box" Home Depot all the way down to a few "Mom and Pop" run hardware stores. Several years ago my small town got its first Home Depot and I wondered how the small hardware stores would survive since their prices are higher. They adapted. And they're thriving. Even still, now that we have TWO Home Depo More..
