World's Largest LCD Screen: 6000 Square Metres

Electrosonic VECTOR and HD Players drive 14.5 million LEDs in Beijing.

Electrosonic MS9200P High Definition video players and VECTOR image processing are being used to drive a vast video canopy that has recently been installed in the central business district of Beijing.

The 6000 square metre (nearly 65,000 sq ft) canopy consists of 14.5 million LEDs which, when fully driven draw a total of More.. over 2MW. The 200m � 30m (656ft � 98ft) canopy is 25m (82ft) above floor level. The open circulation area which it covers forms part of a major new building development, "The Place". The canopy is used at night and has a light background to allow it to act as a surface for special lighting effects when it is not showing images. In addition there is large vertical LED screen that is used conventionally during the day, and which shares the same source and processing system.

The display was engineered by Opto Tech Corporation of Taiwan, with the LED panels being made in its Suzhou factory. Opto Tech chose Electrosonic as their image processing and HD image source partner because of Electrosonic's considerable experience in this kind of installation, and because of the outstanding performance of VECTOR in respect of image scaling for multi-section displays.

The whole canopy display system can be considered as an array of five XGA equivalent displays working as one single display. It is designed for maximum flexibility and a variety of image sources. It can show eight simultaneous video feeds, which are derived from local cameras, local video editing suite, off air, and even gaming devices and phone cameras. It can also show XGA images from local computer sources.

But for the "Big Show" the highest possible image quality is achieved by having five synchronized High Definition sources. Shows are being developed as special attractions that will run at set times - the first has been produced by CCTV (China Central Television).

Both the special shows and the other sources are accompanied by a large multi-channel audio system based on LCS disc recorders and LCS digital mixing, and also by dynamic lighting controlled by a PEAR2004 console. All devices in the system are on a Gigabit Ethernet network, and Medialon Show Manager is used for automatic show control.

The need for flexibility and the great variety of sources dictated that two VECTOR image processing frames be used, with the appropriate complement of input and output cards. All outputs to the displays are digital. The image processing and source configuration is controlled using Electrosonic's C-THROUGH and COMMANDER software.

The Electrosonic MS9200P High Definition players are ideal for the project because they are designed for synchronized operation and can be configured to provide the optimum output resolution and aspect ratio for the application (in this case XGA 1024 � 768). A total of seven players were supplied; five to run the canopy show, one as a source for the daytime screen and one hot stand-by.

Electrosonic provided technical sales and commissioning support to Opto Tech Corporation through its Hong Kong office. The support included consultancy on system configuration and on the best way to get all the different show elements to talk to each other, both for automatic and operator-controlled shows.
